“Bigger than I expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

It took us a lot longer to go through this fort that I thought because there is so much to see. There is a visitor center where you can learn much of the history of the fort. Then we walked outside and toured the fort itself. You can go in some of the ammo storage areas and the command center is fascinating. And all with a fantastic view of Charleston Harbor.

Check out which american flag they are flying today.

This was a very informative site. The video about the history of the fort was very helpful and informative. Great views from the fort and a nice leisurely tour. Good for groups also.

“Interesting History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

It's not the most glorious place but it is full of history and information. I wouldn't make a special trip just to see the place but if you on on Sullivan's Island for something else it's worth an hour or so,

“Historical Overview of an Extraordinary Shoreline Fortification”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

Start with the excellent film in the visitor's center and then do the self-guided tour. You will gain an understanding of the history of shoreline defenses over then past four centuries. We particularly enjoyed how we could see the different fortifications from different periods adjacent to each other. The WWII command post is excellent. The beach is also a pleasant place to reflect on history and enjoy the view. The park ranger was very knowledgeable and helped us select books on the history of slave rebellions. I asked where the slaves learned to grow rice and he said in Africa and it was the African women who knew how to do it. Plan a two hour visit.
