My husband and I happened upon the Gramvoussa Bay Hotel whilst searching for a studio during our unplanned excursion to the West Coast of Crete: what a surprise to find this immaculate hotel sitting in front of it's own sandy cove beach (Viglia Beach). It is absolutely wonderful and the views we have from our balcony are as good as it gets.
The studio is well equipped with AC that works well, a little kitchenette unit that has a two burner (both usable size) electric cooktop intergrated into the stainless steel kitchen sink--and a counter top fridge with freezer. The unit is huge and has two twin beds and a separate single bed (we use it for our suitcases). There is a table and chairs by the kitchenette as well as a table and three chairs on the balcony, where of course we dine overlooking the peninsula and the wide bay that leads to Kastelli Kissamoos, which is about a five minute drive (grocery sponsored by Carrefour, the French supermarket firm, is very good). The garden in front of the hotel is very nice, well planted with grass and of course the large varieties of Med. flowers. Granny watches the custom--the hotel has sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach (gently shelving and usually quite calm). Few people use this beach: the most I have counted was on Sunday: fewer than forty bathers)
The hotel is wheelchair accessible on the ground floor. There are no elevators but there are only three floors and access is good to the rooms, which are entered from the back side of the hotel.
Back to the kitchen: it is nicely supplied with utensils and silverware and dishes as well as some decent pots and pans.
The bathroom is slightly dated: there is a WC, a tiled shower with curtain and hand-held shower head, and a large sink with one small shelf above. Just outside the bathroom is a built in wardrobe with hanging space and under it several drawers.
The beds are comfy and have night tables and mounted lights above for reading.
The Gramvoussa 'Bay Hotel is not posh, but certainly comfortable and ideal for a getaway holiday in Greece. One needs to hire a car or have own transport for it to suit, however. There are no stores or tavernas in walking distance, but there are some good fish tavernas about one km. away at the small fisherman's port.
The Falasarna beach is about a 20 km. drive west of Gramvoussa Bay.
This is an ideal spot as a touring center for the west side of Crete. I esp. recommend a trip to Vlathos where a taverna has a plane tree that is one of the oldest and biggest in the world..a wonderful place to sip a Frappe and contemplate life.
