“Learned a lot!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We knew little of the Gullah culture so enjoyed our short visit to Penn Center. The video gave a good overview of the history and program of the center. They have interesting exhibits to tell their story as well. There is a small gift shop and the buildings are very interesting to view.

Center Museum is open only limited hours so check before visiting.

“Wonderful historical site”

The history, beauty, nice people, food and sense of comraderie and fellowship on this island is a precious gem in South Carolina. I hope that more people can explore and enjoy the experiences in this magical place!

“Beautiful grounds, but the museum is lacking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

We were excited to visit Penn Center, as we wanted to learn more about the Gullah culture and history. When we arrived, I was struck by the beauty of the land and the simplicity of the buildings. I was excited to go in! When we got there, they were just starting the film and told us to head in. The movie was less history on Gullah culture and more on why the Penn Center is so amazing. While I agree that the center is historically significant and extremely amazing for what it did, I did not need a 15 minute video on who has come to visit and why we need to give money to keep it going. The museum portion, after the video was confusing and again was simply pictures with notes from current board members. We stayed for 10 minutes and left. I wish we had skipped this and spent more time in Beaufort.

“Great History Just Needs More Opportunities to Interact”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

This is an absolutely amazing and inspiring place and well worth the visit for its history alone as the first school in the South for freed slaves. The staff was amazing and the interactions with them were great. Felt incredible to be in a place that oozed history and was critical a critical cornerstone and organizing locale for the social justice movement. The only thing that would be helpful would be more opportunities to see the grounds and get out in the local community with support on how to make that happen.
