We exchanged our timeshare week for a July 4 week at Peppertree Ocean Club. I had read the somewhat mixed reviews and was a little anxious about the property. Here are the pros and cons as I see them:
PROS:
1. It's located directly on the beach. This is convenient since you can go back and forth to your unit for food, breaks, etc.
2. It's in North Myrtle Beach, a more laid-back seaside town than Myrtle Beach proper, if that is what you're looking for.
3. The people at check-in were friendly, and check-in and check-out were quick and easy.
4. The one-bedroom unit we had, though small, was cheerfully decorated and relatively clean. Furniture was in good shape, and the queen-size bed was comfortable.
5. You can exchange linens/towels daily (unlike some timeshare resorts).
6. The mini-kitchen does at least offer a full-size fridge and a stove/oven, along with the usual microwave, etc.
7. There are two outdoor pools and one indoor pool and several hot tubs, although small. The grounds were clean.
8. When we first arrived we found no hot water, so we called the front desk, and they immediately sent up a repairman who fixed the problem. There is no problem with the water pressure, by the way!
CONS:
1. While we were there, there was a building going up across the street, and our unit unfortunately was not one of the units facing the ocean, so our kids sleeping in the living room could hear construction noises every weekday morning starting at 7:00, including the ubiquitous back up beeping signal of the trucks. Also didn't offer the prettiest of views, although if you leaned out over the tiny balcony railing, you could view the ocean.
2. Parking is at a premium. The lot at the resort fills up quickly and it's the luck of the draw when you can find a space here later in the evening. There is additional parking across the street, but you have to watch traffic, although it's certainly not heavy traffic in this area most of the time.
3. The one-bedroom unit was one of the tiniest we've ever seen in our 20 years of exchanges. There's a good size sleeper sofa, but we had to rearrange the furniture to allow for an Aerobed that we brought along for our daughter to sleep on, and our son slept on the sofa without pulling out the sofa bed. The dining table has fold-down leaves that had to stay folded down on one side to allow for room, which only provided seating for 3 people at a time. Not a big problem but caused us to be efficient with every square inch of space.
4. The sliding glass door onto the little balcony didn't completely close at the bottom--there was a gradual gap to about 1/2 inch at the bottom. Plus the glass is blurry due to condensation.
5. Bathroom is small. Our sink had a badly repaired crack in the bowl.
6. The outside door to the unit had a loose lock assembly. However, the deadbolt worked, and you have to use a card-key anyway.
Bottom line for us was, we felt that the pros outweighed the cons for the most part. We felt lucky to get an exchange to an ocean-front place during a prime summer week. The minor inconveniences of the small unit did not adversely affect our good time here. We really only slept and ate breakfast in the unit anyway, since we were either on the beach or out shopping or sightseeing or visiting friends the rest of the time.
