“horrible...rude staff, bad room...do NOT go here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2008

I read good reviews about this place, but staying here was one of my worst vacation experiences yet. The staff was horribly rude when we first arrived and made us almost consider looking for another room! The room itself was of a lesser quality than I expected and had a strange smell that I couldn't quite pinpoint...

I would never recommend this hotel to any friends or family...in fact, I would warn against it.

We have a Hobie Miracle 20 catamaran and we always have the worst time trying to find a hotel that can accomodate sailboats and has adequate beach access. This place is perfect in this regard! Not only does it have awesome level access, there are no pesky lifeguards constantly harping on you to put your sails down every time you come in from a run. It's in a great location between North Myrtle Beach and MB proper, tucked away in the Ocean Forest community. The rooms are decent. We always stay on the first floor on the front side; the kids love being able to walk right out of the door and hit the pool only feet away. It's no big deal being across the street from the ocean. The street is not very busy, so crossing is not much of a hassle and the distance is comparable to what you would walk at some true oceanfront accomodations. The parking is always plentiful and you don't have to walk a mile to get from parking lot to room. All in all, we love this place and we stay there every time we go to Myrtle Beach. Click on the photo below to see the view we have from our first-floor balcony; you can see our sailboat on the beach and have a great view of the beach access. This pic was taken in the late afternoon, the pool is not usually in the shade.

This past week we stayed at the Cabana Shores for vacation. It was OK but there was a little "rough around the edges." I will start with the good things. The location is awesome. You are not in the busy, junky part of Myrtle Beach. It was quiet, we were really close to everything, and the neighborhood seemed nice. There were lifeguards on the beach because every few minutes, a lifeguard would ride by in a golf cart thing and patrol the beach. We also saw lifeguard trucks as well as police trucks patroling the beach. The nearest lifeguard stand was just a walk away and we even saw him walk to where we were and get people out of the water when a storm came. The room was very clean looking. The view from our balcony was good (we had a side view room and you could see the ocean). The air conditioner worked great and the room also had a fridge. Crossing the road to the beach was not a problem. There was not a lot of traffic and one car even stopped for us. The staff was wonderful. I saw this one lady I think every day and she always was nice and helpful.

Now the things that need improving. There was only 1 ice machine- and that was on the 1st floor. We went a few times and there was no ice. The back of the hotel/parking area was not that great in appearance and could use an update. This hotel has exterior hallways so when you go out of your room you are outside (I know most hotels in MB have these). The pool itself was very clean but the pool area needed updating. The blinds in the window were dingy looking and needed replacing. The air conditioner leaked all over the balcony and made a puddle of water. The rooms do not have hair dryers or microwaves but irons are provided upon request.

Overall, I probably will not stay there again, but I may stay in that area again.

  • Liked — location, beach, clean
  • Disliked — ice machine, balcony condition, back of building

Just stayed this weekend, it was great. The room was big; we went with the side view room which still offered a great view of the beach. They had picnic tables on the property and an inside area off from the pool which had tables to sit at and a computer with internet access. This is a great place for families or couples looking for a quiet non-party place to get away. It was conveniently located near many restaurants and stores. The staff was very pleasant. The only problem we encountered was our card key didn’t work at first. We didn’t arrive until 4:30 AM and since they don’t have staff around the clock they left our check-in information with the key out so that we could let ourselves in. When the key didn’t work we initially panicked but after going back down to the office we noticed they had emergency numbers posted which we called and they immediately sent a staff member to our room to let us in. So my advice to anyone going is try to arrive before midnight while the office is still open but in the event you can’t or some other emergency should happen in the middle of the night rest assured that there is a staff member on call.

The Cabana Shores is a terrible hotel! It is located in the head of no-where. We booked our stay for a fun-filled week and when we finally found the dump we quickly asked to see the room and it was not the room we had requested. We had requested a suite and we got a BR/LR separated only by one door. The BR had no TV, no window or balcony as promised, and an air conditioning blowing hot iair unit in the wall. It was nasty and the balcony was full of roaches. The beach does not have life guards and you have to cross over a highway to get to the beach. You expect this in a reg room but not a suite!!! Management were jerks!!!
We had paid $175.00 down and we immediately went down to the front desk and complained. Where it was a Sunday we were told that we would have to speak to a Mr. King/Mr.Keene on Monday. Money was tight and I had to call home to get some wired down to us. Also it was the 4th of July week and we spent 3 hours looking for a vacancy.
We stayed at The Patricia Grand- which was GRAND!!!
I called Mr. King/Keene or whatever the manager's name was and he talked smart with me at first and then I told him I was calling the Better Business Bureau. He then told me he would return my money by mail.
On Wednesday of the same week I called to make sure he was going to reimburse us and he said "yes" it is in outgoing mail right now and confirmed my address.
We still to this day have not received our money!!!
What about it manager- remember me?????

We needed a place to stay for a long weekened that was nice but budget friendly. Cabana Shores fit that need. It had been renovated but not 100%. There were things still in need of updating, but overall the staff was nice, our room was super clean and the ocean across the street was great. This is a great place for anyone on a budget but wants an ocean view!

Great price, beautiful views, quite place, and the beach is not crowded. Loved this place and would recommend to everyone going to this area. Excellent location!! Close enough to main attractions, but far enough away to be the quite beach of yesterday. Rooms very clean with lots of space. Great family getaway!!
