After reading several TA reviews about Big Mike's, we were pretty excited to go and check it out. Noting fancy about the place, but when we arrived we noted an eclectic group of folks in the place eating, which we always take as a good sign. Here are the goods, the bads, and the uglies about Big Mike's.
The goods: prices are outstanding - as a matter of fact, if you are eating on a budget, keep BM's in mind; location - easy to find, and the place looks clean (read-on though); service - not bad - the servers were friendly and pretty quick; the menu - a lot of soul food offered - pretty standard fare, and the blue plate special is a good value - a meat and two veggies for $7.95, I think; the portions - huge; Big Mike - don't know if he is there every day, or sits at the front counter like he was when we went there, but when we were there he greeted most folks and engaged them in conversation ("Where you all from?" etc.) - Big Mike is the kind of guy you want to see succeed.
The bads: quality of the food was just OK - this is not a "bad" per se, but after reading the reviews of others, I was expecting something memorable - it was not in that category; did I mention the cleanliness of the place(?) - again, not overtly dirty or scummy, but you get that feeling that it wouldn't be too hard to find the dirt, etc. (read on) - kind of had that feel of grease that had been wiped away with a rag that still had some grease on it; ambiance - there is none - tables and chairs and a couple TVs on with no sound - go there for the food.
The uglies: while we were eating, a little critter decided to come out in the daylight and crawl up the wall next to us. We had planned to try the peach cobbler, but could barely finish our meal before we left (my wife really wanted to leave right then).
Like I said, we want Big Mike to succeed, but it is impossible to overlook the apparent lack of cleanliness that allows critters to come out and join you while you are eating.
The rating is more of a rating of the food than the overall experience. Unfortunately, we will find it difficult to return to Big Mike's.
