“Visit to Skywheel”

We enjoyed this experience very much. They had fireworks at 10 at the boardwalk also. The wheel is 20 stories high and not for the faint of heart.

“Everything you need to know! Discounts, strollers, etc!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

My family and I finally decided to go on the SkyWheel tonight since being built in 2011. Here is how our experience went:

We knew with a total count of 11 people with us, we wanted to take advantage of the coupon offered in the Monster book. Be sure to get one! It will save you $2 on an adult ticket and $1 on a child's ticket. It is good for up to six people. Be sure to read the really, really hard to read print below that says you must use it by 7:00PM.

We were in somewhat of a hurry coming from a restaurant and looking for a place to park downtown right around 6:45PM or 6:50PM. Remember, the SkyWheel does not have it's own parking. We forgot that Wednesday nights the boardwalk area has fireworks which we believe added to the crowd and trying to find a place to park.

After securing parking we were able to get our tickets and have them scanned to get in line about 7:10PM. Even though we were a few minutes passed time, they had no issue with letting us use the discounted rate. Also note, just to the right of the line is a clean set of restroom that come in handy.

We entered the line and were asked if we wanted to have our picture taken. We said, "no thanks" and moved along. There was no pressure in it which we appreciated. There were about 30 people ahead of us in line. Even though they were filling up every other car, two cars at a time (at max capacity they could fill four at a time), the line moved relatively quick. Be sure to catch some pictures looking up from the base of the wheel while in line if you can. Most of it is shaded.

As you get ready to board, if you have any strollers, just leave them in the boarding area. During your ride, they will relocate them for you to the other side so they can be picked up when you get off.

Each enclosed gondola can hold up to six people. Five of us went in one, six in the other. Before closing the doors, the ride attendant pointed out a red emergency button the ceiling. He said if for whatever reason we needed to come down, just to hit the button. Upon entering the vehicle I made note of the time, 7:17PM. We began our ascendant.

The first thing I noticed is how smooth the ride actually is. You have to look out the window to see if you are moving, you really can't feel it. We all got a kick out of the 360 degree view. The downtown area, city, boardwalk, ocean and hotel skyline in both directions is really neat. Don't forget to do your best to look straight down through the bubble like square cars.

Before boarding we asked how many rotations we get. We were told 3. We also saw reviews that sometimes it could be 4 and the ride lasts about 11-13 minutes. For us... we went around 6 times! Time out: 7:35... 18 minutes! Wow! Not sure if this is the norm, or we just got a treat, but the ride was longer than we expected! How nice!

From start to finish, the ride attendants were very friendly. In fact, we had 4 small kids in our gondola. One time as we passed by the platform, one of the attendants made eye contact with my son and began to "chase him" like he was going to get him, just being fun and friendly. We got a kick out of that. There were other times when the attendants would wave to our kids going by too.

Upon exiting, we grabbed our strollers and made the required trek through their souvenir shop. We all agreed we had a fun time. The only thing that did not get this a five star rating was the price. But, at a cost of $12 million to build it, I guess they have to pay for it and make money somehow.

I've included a number of pictures with this review. Be sure to have a look. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help answer them. Please let me know.

“Long line but good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

We waited in line to get tickets.... Then waited another half hour to get on the ride. We went at night and it was good but I kind of wished we went during the day cuz you cannot really see as much at night- especially the beach;( We went around 4 times- up about 10 minutes. Its $13 for adults and $9 for kids. They do take your picture for another charge and have a gift shop as you exit.

“First time”

We rode in the late morning when there was no line and we very much enjoyed it. You could see the shore all the way in either direction.

“Great Views”

3 times around - great views and Air conditioned. I would do it again. A little pricey - but hey - it's the beach.
