After reading tons of the reviews, good and bad, we decided to give this place a shot. We stayed in the middle of July of this year, 2010, and really enjoyed our experience. The place was extra crowded for they were at capacity due to people traveling away from the Gulf this year. Even with that said, the overall experience was FANTASTIC! I don't care who you are, it is nearly impossible to satisfy everyone when you have a full house. As long as you are realistic and have patience you will truly enjoy this place.
As stated, we had a wonderful time for the pros definately out weighed the cons. I will comment on both below:
You can't beat the location for the hotel is right on the beach & is located in North Myrtle Beach! Having two young kids this was great for this complex had everything we needed and we did not leave the facility for the entire week. The Plantation is gated and has several condos and timeshares through the complex. This makes it nice for there is a lot of nice areas to walk & enjoy the scenery and nature. There is a nice ice cream shop at the front of the complex which is a nice 15 minutes walk. They also have a pizza place (good pizza, I would recommend at least getting it once for it's worth it.) and they have an Italian restaurant which I also recommend.
The hotel staff was fabulous...check-in was decent for we arrived at 12:00 noon on a Saturday. They could utilize additional staff on the weekend but then again they did decent with the people they had. There are two lines, one for regular guests and one for Hilton Members; stay in the normal line for the Hilton Members line only has 1 staff member and Hilton Members tend to be overly picky! I say this and I am a Diamond Member but I also live in the real world and don't expect something for nothing.
The rooms have been recently updated & the decor was very nice! I agree with other reviews that the air conditioners and sliding doors need some updating but they weren't horrible. Turn the air conditioner as low as it goes and the room will be quite comfortable for you. This is coming from someone who sleeps with a fan blowing in my face 365 days a year, I am always hot and the room was very comfortable for me.
* The pools were great! Having such a large pool area, 2 main pools, several hot tubs and a waterpark, really kept any sort of "overcrowded" feeling non-existant. Plus having the beach right there probably helped too.
The food at the pool bar was very good for a pool bar and I had no problem spending that amount of money for the quality food we received! The nachos are to die for. Room service was also great and you have many choices for a lot f local restaurants deliver so you NEVER have to leave your room to eat if you choose to do so.
As great as the stay was, there were a few negatives that I feel deserve mentioning:
As stated in other reviews, it can be a bit of wait for an elevator. We stayed on the 9th floor and tended to walk down when the elevator was busy. It can be time consuming to wait for a down elevator but taking one up from the lobby is not bad at all. If you walk down, you can go through the bar are, unlock the glass door by unlocking the bottom door bolt and walk down the curvy flight of stairs which will dump you out right in front of the buffet. If you go down the other stairwell then you will go through the office area of the hotel and then you will have to walk down the hallway to the same buffet stairs. Not bad and it truly beats waiting for the elevator when times are busy.
Internet: Didn't use it for we were on vacation and I left work at home. However, this is not unusual for a higher end hotel to charge for internet so as long as you understand that going in there should be no issue.
If you plan on taking advantage of the free breakfast, get there early as everyone has stated! Food is decent but if you send a family member down to get some items off the buffet, they have to go containers that you can take to the room. I enjoyed this for I first got a Starbucks coffee from the coffee bar in the lobby and then got in line to gather some food items to take to the room.
I really hope this review helps you for I look to these reviews when choosing hotels and really appreciate a good honest review.
The positives heavily outweigh the negatives, but be prepared to feel as if you are a head of cattle in a large herd. Great beach access, variety of pools to choose from, great rooms and good staff. We are off to Disney World for our next family vacation but the boys have already asked if we could then come back here. Keep this in mind for one final comment...We are beach people and we love the tropics. With that said we have NEVER visited the same place twice and my wife and I would LOVE to bring the kids back here anytime they want. After Disney World we WILL be back! Enjoy your vacation!
