First off let me say that my wife and I probably spent 3 to 4 weeks searching places to stay on our first trip to Myrtle Beach, so I feel as though we tried to do our due diligence. I feel as though I should write a review for anyone in the same situation as us. We were looking for a "Resort" feel and decided that this was the place for us after searching the internet for weeks.
We chose Oceans One because it looked like the newest place we could find with a great view and modern, clean rooms at a decent price. Once we got there we were a little surprised at what we saw. First off the parking and check in is across the street and that's not terrible, but it just became very annoying towards the end to cross a busy street anytime we needed to leave or go to the car. At night time parking was pretty full so we were always at the back of the lot. If you want to drop your bags off there is a small driveway big enough for 3 cars at the actual building, but we just decided to park across the street and take our bags from there. Overall, not that big of deal.
If you happen to check in and the room is not ready, you can get your pool pass (wristband) and go to the pool till your room is ready. That is a nice touch, but not sure where the bathrooms are for you to change.
When we got to our room (which was #11 plan on the 14th floor, Single bedroom, single bathroom, and modern by the way which we like) the view was absolutely spectacular. We could see 2nd Ave Pier and up and down the coastline. It was great. The balcony was perfect as well. Plus with big glass sliding doors you could have the doors open to enjoy the ocean sound or shut if you wanted it a little quieter but still enjoy the view. The view was 5 stars.
The tile in the entire place looked very worn and dirty. There were multiple cracks and chips and broken tile. There was a electrical outlet cover that was broken right by the sick so you couldn't miss it. The bedroom was tiny and dark and the lamps had 3 burned out bulbs. We could have requested them to be fixed, but we didn't spend much time in there, so we didn't care that much. Although you would think that cleaning service would see that they were burned out. The TV units are junk and no HD (not a huge deal since we were not there to watch tv).
The shower curtain in bathtub was disgusting. It look like it had never been washed and it had black dots all over that looked like mold at the bottom. Each time we got into the shower there were black hairs on the tub and those didn't come from us as my wife has blonde hair and I have red. Not sure if they were stuck on the shower curtain or what. Twice I went to grab a clean towel that the maid just put in there that day and there was a black hair on the towels. Very disgusting. The walls were dented, scratched, and beat up very badly. The kickboards to the vanity in the bathroom was rotten and falling apart. Paint above the shower on the ceiling was coming off. A little paint could go a long ways in overhauling the entire atmosphere in the room. I understand that its a busy place during the summer and the off season is when the rooms are probably fixed, but this was bad.
The couch and chair were white which I thought was odd as much traffic as they see, but they are a cheap vinyl like fabric so easy to clean, but not too comfortable. The entertainment stand has definitely seen better days as well. Each time you opened the fridge door, the entire refrigerator would come out from the wall because the door was sticking to the refrigerator. That was just annoying as well, but not a deal breaker. There is no restaurant or bar on sight, but they do have a lounge. Why its even there I have no idea. Vending machines and that's it.
Now for the outside. The outdoor pool was very warm and even though it wasn't too terribly big, it was good enough to relax in. The splash pad would be good for kids and the indoor pool has a double sided waterfall so that was cool. Never got in the lazy river but it look like one lap would take about 30 seconds, so I'm not sure what the point would be. Never got too crowded, but we were in September so I just chalk it up to off season. Now for the hot tubs. They have 3 on sight, 2 outdoors and 1 indoors. The one indoors could fit 6 people or so, but there was hardly any water in it to make it worth while. One of the outside ones was broken and had no hot water, and the only good one outside had hardly any water in it even though there was a hose in it, so what was the point. This is what really turned my wife off about the place.
Easy beach access so that was very nice. Make sure to bring your own towel because you cant use Oceans One's on the beach. The beach rentals were either 30 or 50 bucks for 2 chairs and an umbrella and I'm not sure of the time allotment. There were extra chairs out there, but they were chained up so we figured that we had to pay extra for those. We didn't do that, but you should just go to Walmart and buy what you need. Oceans One isn't connected to the boardwalk, but its within a 5 to 10 minute walk either via beach or street so you can get some good exercise by walking everywhere.
The location of the hotel is ok, but it just seems like its in a dumpy area of MB. A few motels are closed and look terrible. Most motels across the street seem in pretty bad shape. You can walk to the shops and places to eat on the boardwalk within 5-25 minutes. Its very touristy area.
Overall, this wasn't what we thought it was going to be. Location was amazing but that's were it stopped. Pretty pricey for what you actually get and list of rules to follow is astounding. Maybe we had a bad room or something, but we will not be back. For as new as the place is, it sure seems like it was beat to hell from all the use or just the summer use and carpet in the hallways were stained as well. We will be spending the extra money and stay in a nicer place next time.
I really wish things would have turned out better because the staff was actually very friendly, courteous, and professional. Just wish the product offered was better.
