“Not as good as others make it out to be, esp. with no power”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

Had been told by friends that this was a MUST SEE place. When we entered there was a delay at the place where you pay your entrance fee. We were told that their computers were down and could we pay in cash rather than credit card. OK, no problem. However when we arrived at the main visitor center and immediately headed for the restrooms, we were told that all of their power was out. Have you ever tried to pee in a completely dark public restroom? Shops and restaurants were closed due to lack of power too. To top it off, many of the flowers were past prime; very little flowers in bloom, and this was early May. The sculptures were nice, but that's about it. We sort of wished they had told us at the outset that power was out and/or charged a reduced fee, but they didn't do either. We've been to much better botanical gardens than this one.

We apologize for the inconvenience you encountered during your visit here last week. The power outage affected the entire area and rarely occurs on such a wide scale. We hope you will visit again soon ( your admission ticket is good for seven days) and see some of the other parts of Brookgreen such as the accredited zoo or the historical sites.

“Great place to relax.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

We spent an afternoon there and did not have time to see as much as we would have liked! We did have a fabulous lunch at the restaurant and enjoyed wandering around the sculpture garden. Go if you can.

“A place to unwind”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

The gardens and sculptures are beautiful. Plan a day to relax - pack a lunch and a good book too. There are picnic tables in a shaded area and benches throughout the gardens, so you can explore the gardens and then take some time relaxing too.

“Sculpture Garden a must-see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

Brookgreen Gardens is definitely worth a visit when in the Myrtle Beach / Pawleys Island area. Spent about 2 1/2 hours there and was not able to see everything. We focused on the Sculpture Garden, which is the #1 thing to see there; and it can easily take a couple hours to wander through. Two places on site to have lunch - we chose the Old Kitchen, which is a restored plantation kitchen. The other location is Pavilion Restaurant and both have outdoor seating as well as indoor. I have been to many botanical garden sites and this one was exceptional and a great value as well. $14 regular admission ($12 for seniors). Multiple fountains, tons of sculpture, well-manicured garden areas, beautiful flowering plants, guided tours available and lots of plant labels for the inquiring horticulturist. The old plantation site is filled with ancient live oak trees and Spanish moss, which add considerably to the charm. We didn't ride the tram - if we had stayed longer than 3 hours, we would have ridden it to the other side of the grounds to see the butterfly garden ($3 extra) and the 'zoo' which offers the chance to see local animals in natural habitat. But it was just too much for us in one day. The ticket is actually good for a week ... if you are staying nearby that would be a great value and a way to see the entire site, because I don't think it can be done in one day. We plan to return on another visit to the area and see the Butterfly Garden and Zoo areas. It was recommended in the visitor center that you go to the animal area at feeding time if you want to get a glimpse in the natural habitat area. This is a must see if you are in the Carolinas!!
