“Nice Tribute to Our Submariners”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2014 NEW

You could drive by this if you aren't looking. This is a nice tribute to our submariners, they don't really get the recognition they deserve. Certainly worth the stop and remember those who served under the water. You'll want to check it out.

“Remembers the Silent Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2014

This unusual memorial at Patriot's Point remembers the decades of the cold war in the silent service, which loomed very large in Charleston when it was the main port for Polaris Missle submarines and the Naval Weapons Station. The reality of nuclear war loomed massively large here, since the City had figured so importantly in several other American wars. Thousands of people living in Charleston knew the reality of what nuclear war would be and understood that a Russian nuclear sub was on station, just off the coast, ready to neutralize Charleston's nuclear navy in minutes. Nobody in Charleston took the idea of fallout shelters seriously. We lived for the first 30 years of my life with the knowledge that it could all be over, without any warning, in the next second and we would be vaporized. We sent attack submarines out to defend the City and the Nation that's job was to blow the Russian sub out of the ocean before they could launch, the City's only chance of survival. The attack submarines followed the Russian ones all the time, often within a few hundred feet monitoring activity and communications. Nobody talked about this stuff much when I was a boy, but every adult knew it. Thsi memorial consists of a sail and fins from a real sub in a memorial garden where the grass and bushes simulate a nuclear sub cruising on the surface, as they did going in and out of Charleston harbor.

This memorial site was under rehab when we got there, but it gives you a great history lesson about the subs used in the Cold War and is just an amazing structure. Must see!!
