We recently booked a 3-hour sunset cruise on the double-masted Schooner Welcome that turned out to be a private cruise for our group of four adults (we were the only ones booked). It was a great way to spend the evening in Hilton Head. While the schooner was built in the early '1970s, it was built in the style of ships from the 1700s and it almost entirely made of wood. Other than a small motor to get in and out of the marina/creek, you travel by wind power.
The skipper gave us each a turn at the helm, and we were able to help raise and lower the sails. We sailed from Shelter Cove Marina out Broad Creek and into Calibogue Sound over to Dafuskie Island. Then we turned toward Harbour Town and made our way back to the creek by a slightly different route around a couple islands. We were under sail much of the way back to the marina.
While the sails are up, it's a very quiet and peaceful experience with the only sounds being those of the sails and ropes creaking and the water lapping on the bow.
It was a lovely evening, and we would love to do it again! Take a look at the pictures to see for yourself.
Note: The best parking to access the dock for the Welcome is behind San Miguel restaurant at Shelter Cove.
