“excellent stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

I stayed 4 nights in the first week of January. Just about everything was ideal for me. Indoor corridors - each room has a private balcony. One side faces the creek and the shrimp boats; the other the marsh (parking lot gets puddly; entire building above ground level). I got the marsh and was glad for it - the quiet and the wildlife. Not at all aware of noise inside or outside the building (Inn is between two popular eating/drinking places). Felt completely safe. Room was clean with every possible needed appliance and comfortable bed. Very little interaction with the staff; housekeeping was friendlier than the front desk. Easy drive over the spectacular Ravenal bridge to tourist Charleston (Patriots Point is even closer)

Room Tip: I think the marsh side is quieter but the creek side is colorful. Elevator (and pop machines) is in...

We are so glad that you enjoyed our accommodations. A lot of people choose the marsh side over the creek side for the same reasons you did. The birds and other wildlife are spectacular over the marsh. We hope you'll choose Shem Creek Inn again when traveling to this area in the future.

But not so much in the guest care area. On every occasion the staff could have made a difference for a guest -- they avoided the opportunity.

Our room was fine - great view. But balcony door was jammed and lock broken. To open a the patio door, we really had to struggle - even to close it again. Very comfortable sleeping accomodations and room size; expected a bit better though in the feeling of safety/security.

Still, the service was less than great. During the continental breakfast hours -- the few items offered were often empty, and left guests wondering if they would even get some milk, or some butter -- even napkins. No one at the front desk -- though it was right there, would ever step in or pay attention. We noticed this daily. One would have to approach the front desk to request something, and it just seemed so awkward.

Not a very comfortable area to have a continental breakfast in, but when in season the weather would permit outdoor seating which would help.

Nevertheless, the staff was not very approachable. They would respond when asked a question -- but even a simple question like information about an area activity, left us feeling like we were imposing. The only truly friendly people I encountered was the housekeeping staff.

Not that the staff was rude - just "not into us" or any of the guests from what I could see. Too bad for those who chose to work in the hospitality industry -- but worse for those of us who could have been made to feel a bit more comfortable.

Room Tip: Check patio doors/locks. Make a room change request right away if you prefer. We faced the water whi...

It is always difficult to read a review where the customer was left feeling uncomfortble or ignored. Our staff is usually extremely customer service oriented and as you can see from previous reviews, this is one of our attributes. I am very sorry that this guest was left feeling under appreciated to say the least. We did run into a breakfast item shortage during the holidays due to no delivery that week and for this we apologize. Thank you for your review.

The hotel is not luxurious, the parking lot was unpaved and we tracked in a lot of mud. The room was average. We were happy to see a microwave and refrigerator; however, the refrigerator ended up freezing our food solid! The marsh view was nice, and nicer yet was getting out and walking the boardwalk through the marsh along the rivers edge. From the boardwalk you could see the Ravenel bridge to Charleston. There are a lot of shops and restaurants nearby. Our favorite restaurant was Papa Zuzu's. The continental breakfast was average, but the river view from the eating area was great. There were seagulls in the swimming pool (this was in December, so no one was swimming).

Than you for sharing your experience. The marsh views and creek views are spectacular. The boardwalk is a great way to take in nature and they allow fishing at the end on the pier.

First of all book your room online the prices are $25-35 cheaper than calling the hotel. Their motto is something to the effect of; let us know how to make your stay better. Which they will be happy to accommodate provided you don't ask for anything. The room was average with descent decor however the paint inside the closet was coming off in huge chunks and the bathroom desperately needed to be updated. It's pretty bad when even my husband says the toilet seat needs to be replaced since he usually doesn't notice things. I understand the concept of a continental breakfast but good grief to say it was average would be very generous. All things considered paying only $74/night the place was tolerable but I don't see myself going back anytime soon.

Thank you for your review. I would like to clarify that we do guarantee the lowest rates when booking directly with the hotel or through our website. At times and simply due to human error, rates can get posted incorrectly though this would be an isolated situation.

We do want our guests to enjoy their stay with us and try to accommodate guest requests to the best of our ability. We also maintain an inventory of maintenance items to repair/replace things when they malfunction or break. I'm sorry that this guest had a few unpleasant experiences.

For a Christmas get away I planned our first trip to Charleston South Carolina. Usually for our Christmas stays we like B&B's but for this trip I chose to stay outside of downtown and this "inn" sounded just like something we would like, on the water with a relaxed feeling. I base my decisions after reading the reviews which I take with a grain of salt. I must have been feeling generous when I booked this reservation.

The location was great (although the parking lot was a wet mess which never dried up) Being on the water was nice but the only thing you look out on are the bars/restaurants there is a park next door that does go out into the marsh. The outside is rundown but I chalked that up to being on the water. The front desk staff were all very nice as was the maintenance man both times we saw him to fix the toilet in our room.

The first night we spent in our "deluxe" room the toilet left puddles on the floor which was addressed quickly. However the bedroom and bathroom were in desperate need of cleaning. The paint and wallpaper on the walls was stained and peeling the ceiling tiles were rimmed with dust or mold, the a/c vent was black and on the ceiling right over the bed there was a huge cobweb larger than a golf ball. But the bedding and towels were clean. We are not snobs and don't expect to stay in the Ritz but we do like expect a clean room and have to worry about getting sick.

The next morning when we advised the front desk of the still leaking toilet they moved us to the room next door and knocked of $10 per night. We were fine with that, it was a better room for us because it had less windows so it was darker for sleeping. We did tell the guy at the front desk to let the cleaners know they missed the cobweb (he seemed to embarrassed). The second room had a cobweb on the ceiling but it was between the 2 beds. Upon our return that evening we found that our room had not been made up so when we went to the front desk to ask where to put our trash we informed the nice young lady of the cobwebs in the second room (she too seem very embarrassed).

All in all our stay was a nice one. We had a clean bed and hot shower.

I also want to mention that if you stay here there is a trolley that picks you up in the park which is next door and it will take you around to several different places and bring you back so you don't have to loose your covered parking spot (if you are lucky enough to grab one) in the summer they team up with the water taxi. Contact Lowcountry Trolley Loop Tour it's a hop on hop off it's $15pp if you buy online $20 at the door and afterwards I saw a Groupon for $15 for 2

When my husband and I pulled up to this hotel, I thought oh my what did we get into. The parking lot is not paved and the outside is really run down. But the outside does have a besutiful boardwalk to walk down and see some wildlife ( dolphins!). The inside is very well kept and the staff was very friendly. Our hotel room was clean and comfortable. The surrounding areais also verynice with lots of good restaurants. Well definitely be going back!

Loved the staff, very friendly, helped you with recomndations and directions. Complementary breakfast, location great near by restaurants, great charm with the creek and the boats. The place is not a big fancy inn,but it has a special charm and home welcoming feel, and it was very clean! Convient location to everything in the area, easy access to many things to see.Definitely would stay there again.

Room Tip: Creek side would be nice during boating season, but really we stayed marshside and it was fine just...
