My wife and I stayed at The Sanctuary in mid-January, a very quiet time to be at the beach. We had a beautiful suite on the top floor. Because of the season and the over-all price, I chose a Garden Suite. I assumed this meant not a beach view, correct, actually it was directly over the entry, with almost no garden in sight, so be aware of your room location at this property.

Luxurious linens, two bathrooms, flat screen and regular TV's. Marble everywhere. Superior, superior. Polished. Clean.

The lobby was really well appointed. Reminded me of the Disney Yacht Club in Orlando in scope, but really better done. Everything in the public areas was in perfect condition. The informal restaraunt was actually pretty formal, but with big scale wicker seating. Had the green eggs and ham, which is an odd looking dish, but good. The formal dining room was very formal, oppulent, heavy dark wood. I am not a drinker, but what a beautiful bar! If you choose the formal dining, recognize that you are in for a VERY formal experience.

The staff was all friendly. Generally young, just getting going in this type of setting. Everyone seemed to be thrown slightly off-balance by the low occupancy, several seemed eager to talk, to do something extra, but not certain where the line between familiar and professional lay.

I would not normally mention Housekeeping in a review, but in this case I thought it was the housekeeping staff that approached perfection. The person who came to turn down our bed noticed my wife was chilly on the couch and brought her a blanket. The maid lined my shoes up in the closet. Kudos.

I have been to some great hotels but this one by far is the nicest. If you want quiet and easy, then this is it. Tremendous location on the beach with a great spa and its signature restaurant, The Ocean Room.
Fantastic, and hope to do it again real soon.

Spent a recent long weekend at The Sanctuary. Overall score probably just below a 5 star...This place is not for everyone, but perfect for couples, especially if one or both golf. We came to Kiawah with the kids while this hotel was under construction several years ago. Most top hotels can make you feel you are being taken advantage of, with prices they charge for room and the incidentals. Ths place is no different. But nice common areas, good sized room (we were given a rare upgrade to nice room overlooking the lawn and beach). May seem odd, but biggest complaint was about the bathroom. Not sure how the architect of a Mobil 5 star hotel can install open slatted doors in the bathroom, both for the toilet room and the bathroom door. Not the sign of a top hotel in my mind. Food at the breakfast buffet was good; the reader can decide if $20 pp is a good price. We ate one night at the Ocean Room and once at the Jasmine Terrace.. Ocean Room is more formal, but features what can be best be described as 'minimalist' portions at high prices. Wines are too expensive by the glass. Service was good at the resort, certainly better than some have written about. Coming from the NorthEast we were taken back by the number of people who smile and say hello at Kiawah (and Charleston). Most people who go to The Sanctaury are going to pamper themselves, even if it means sucking it up and paying too much for a room and meals. The island is still very attractive, the beach (though not useable this time of year), has lots of appeal for walkers/ bikers/runners.

Wow, what a slice of heaven at the South Carolina Coast. We usually stay in a condo on Kiawah Island, but were told by friends how wonderful the Sanctuary is. We were not disappointed! The staff was very accomodating and helpful. Our ocean front room was spacious with lovely amenities. We loved that we could rent bikes to ride along the beach. We really enjoyed our meals at the Ocean Room. Our romantic weekend proved to be better than expected and now we are expecting!

  • Liked — tranquil beach location
  • Disliked — when we had to head back home
  • Tips/Secrets: — take advantage of asking knowledgable staff about day trips, shopping, excursions, etc.

We were here for a convention, and it was wonderful. We had a suite that was beautiful! Service was superb. It blows me away to think how expensive the furnishings were in the room and throughout the hotel. The lobby area is gorgeous--just perfectly gorgeous!!! It's expensive, but I'm worth it!!!
