What a place , looks like its been there for years ( 2004) as a mansion for a plantation , deep colour wood floors , high ceilings and two huge staircases. Bar and restaurants lovely and comfortable and great service . Prices not bad for cocktails or wine . Breakfast great - shrimp and grits a bit like a mild curry ( spoken as a brit ) but is a must .
Mint Julep by the pools fab and a very short walk on to the beach is a must .
Golf shop and gift shop both good and not too bad in cost . Godd quality . Staff all very friendly and helpful .
Golf courses all looked fab and friends who played The Ocean were speachless. Didnt go to the spa but the fitness room and indoor pool looked godd and very clean .

Room Tip: 4th floor ocean view with balcony

Just returned from The Sanctuary where we had stayed for three days after New York. What a contrast. Immediately relaxed in the beautiful setting by the ocean. Excellent food and service with a number of fantastic golf course including The Ocean Course. Rooms are an excellent size with views of the sea. Good gym and indoor pool along with the two outdoor pools which were also heated!
With such a stunning place I thought it was excellent value for money with food being reasonable for the quality of hotel. The bar was also I thought reasonable with beers being about $5 and cocktails $10 - $15. I am already planning another visit in the near future and it would be great for kids as well.

If you're looking for a fun healthy vacation just book the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island and you're done. You can be as active as you want, and still savor the relaxed beauty of the island here. This is an especially great vacation destination for couples or families that like to do different things but still be able to join up quickly and easily throughout the day. The staff here could not have been more accommodating too. for golfers - the Ocean Course was a real treat - for both the not so great golfer or the champion - they don't make you feel bad if you're not so good as long as you have the right attitude and don't hold people up. The Tennis program is a bit dependent on the season and how busy the resort is. If you go off season and/or when it's slow, you probably won't be able to play as much if you don't bring a partner to play with. But take advantage of the fantastic pro's - especially Roy Barth and Brandon (or was it Brendon?). Best lessons ever! Kayaking can be hit or miss - if you miss the dolphins, the activity is best for the beginner kayakers, kind of slow for the more advanced. No matter what, make sure you take a bike on the beach. If you've never done this before, it's a real kick! So don't bother looking elsewhere - this place is the real deal. And staying at the Sanctuary ensures that you will love every minute of your time spent in this part of heaven.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the ground floor rooms - they're level with the people walking by. Anything above...

Until now my favourite hotel has always been Claridges in London. However I feel that I will have to revise this and say in future that it is the Sanctuary. The room, food, wine and in particular the service were exemplary. The location of the hotel in the dunes so close to an amazing beach is perfect and feels special and private. The staff are attentive yet discrete and to a man and woman very professional and welcoming. The breakfast is the best I have had in the USA and the ambience of the bar and lounge in the afternoon a delight. There are many dining options and our party tried nearly all and not a fault found. We look forward to staying hear again ....

My daughter and I spent five delightful days at the Sanctuary recently, enjoying the luxurious and pretty rooms facing the ocean with balconies for viewing, friendly and helpful staff, good food and great activity options. My boyfriend had ordered a beautiful bouquet to greet me upon my arrival, made to order by the fabulous floral shop in the hotel and accompanied by a note that the kind concierge, Charlie, had copied for me and placed in a Sanctuary envelope, to accompany the flowers. My room had a living room attached to it, with a sofa that converted into a bed, a wide hallway and a guest bathroom. The sense of space was truly wonderful, and the furnishings were beautiful, complete with healthy, live plants! The sheets were so soft, the mattress so comfortable. And a nice bathrobe and slippers were available for use, and the thickest, softest towels I've ever experienced in a hotel. The pools were heated to a comfortable temperature, and the Loggerhead Grill served the beach as well as the pool areas with good food, especially the crab salad. We were always able to have lounge chairs and umbrellas by the beach, and the beach attendants were glad to give us an extra towel and cold bottled water. We had breakfast at Jasmine Porch, where Margaret or Charles would make "to order" omelets, and when I asked for feta cheese, Margaret fetched it for me from the kitchen, then had it available every day after that. The breakfast buffet was ample and delicious. My daughter and I ended up enjoying dinners at The Atlantic Room at the Ocean Course Clubhouse better than Jasmine Porch, due to the fine views of the ocean and golf course, as well as superior food. We enjoyed renting bikes from the Sanctuary and riding by marshlands with beautiful birds on the way to the Ocean Course, a 16 mile roundtrip ride, also taking us by lovely homes, beautifully landscaped. I would have liked to have seen a sign at the bike rental place asking bikers to ride around the shorebirds on the beach busily looking for food, so that they would not be disturbed. In general, I would have like to have seen more promotion of environmental awareness at the hotel, although I am pleased that they switched their lights to LED bulbs to save energy while we were there and had signs encouraging people to keep their balcony doors closed for energy efficiency. We took the "dolphin encounter" tour down the Kiawah River, and were delighted to spot several bottlenose dolphins feeding, as well as bald eagles. Our guide told us of a developer's controversial plans to develop the Captain Sam's spit area for 50 homes, although new species of sea life were being found in the area almost daily. Later, I read in the Charleston paper that a road with a retaining wall along the river would be built to access the development, which would ruin the dolphin's strand feeding beach. But all in all, my daughter and I loved our stay at the Sanctuary, truly a world class resort.

Room Tip: Try to reserve an ocean front room, on a high floor, for fabulous views.

The four days here were a real treat. The Sanctuary is an Eden and one where spending the money is well worth it. The staff is incredible and caters to every need without being intrusive, They all clearly went to "nice school". The facilities are superb and the grounds spectacular. Could not ask more of the guys at the beach. Loved the Loggerhead Grill and Bar. Best cheeseburger I have ever had. The Jasmine Porch has great breakfasts and dinners. Loved the Charleston turtle ice cream at Beaches and Cream. Sitting in the Lobby bar for two nights was fun. Great people watching and delicious food. Be sure to have the She Crab Bisque. The one negative was that we had to ask for our room to be cleaned. This was later in the afternoon. Can't fault the crews trying to get all of the rooms made up. It just came as a surprise.
Can't wait to go back!!!! It is just the right place for anything that ails you.

Room Tip: I don't know of any bad ones, although I might ask not to be on the first floor.

When we I pulled up to the main entrance - the valets opened the car doors after which we ran a gauntlet of 3 or 4 people on each side of the path to the front doors welcoming us to The Sanctuary - at the large main entrance doors each was pulled open by a staff member as we approached - and once in the lobby another 2 or 3 staff welcomed us again and directed us to the registration desk. My wife commented that it felt as though we were entering Downton Abbey. Our concerns that the place would be stuffy or pretentious were laid to rest in short order.

This is simply one of the best run properties I have ever had the pleasure of visiting (with prices that are not shy about reflecting that level of excellence). The room was spacious and gracious - with a breathtaking view of the ocean from the balcony.

Restaurants were all very good to excellent. Golf courses fabulous. Poolside service was excellent (and they have a separate 18 and older pool area and hot tub which is a nice touch).

The staff are all top-notch. A small example of their attention to detail ... one afternoon upon returning to the room after housekeeping had been in, we noticed that the scrap of paper my wife had been using as a bookmark in her novel had been replaced with a beautiful tasseled Sanctuary bookmark (her scrap of paper saved in the front of the book).

Room Tip: Corner and ocean front rooms may not be worth the higher prices - virtually every room has some degr...
