OK, so this restaurant isn't for everyone . . . but if you DO make reservations and arrive on time, you will be served a very good meal. We have been to Dye's 3 times, always with reservations. We have not been there for the buffet meal.
Admittedly the decor is unusual, but it is certainly is interesting. Don't exactly know why the reservation issue is a problem for so many folks, we make reservations for other restaurants, don't we? Since her food is cooked to order, she needs to know how many people are coming and when. Makes sense.
We had her fried chicken again, and also tried the baked chicken and macaroni and cheese. Sides were black eyed peas and collard greens. To start, Dye brings out the absolutely BEST cornbread I've ever eaten! It could be a meal in itself . . We asked about okra, and although it's not on the menu, she had some fresh okra and cooked some for us at no charge. We also ordered her shrimp hush puppies as an appetizer and they were wonderful.
And yes, there is a delightful young lady, age 8, who helps in the restaurant. She is Dye's niece, the daughter of Dye's sister who helps out in the kitchen.
It's not a classy restaurant, but if you want good food this is a great place to try. Remember it is a "Gullah" inspired restaurant, so ignore the grammar slips on the signs on the door. Enjoy!
