“Super beach, pools for all seasons, a real resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

We are owners here, and we stay in the oceanside unit every year, usually in June. We couldn't be happier. The units are spacious (we stayed with our daughters family of six in a two bedroom unit), well-equipped and well maintained. They have 3 pools, including an indoor pools, which really makes this resort year-round (although it is cool December thru February). The staff is very accomodating, and there are plenty of activities if you choose to go.

I'm a fan of the pool right by the ocean, since you can go back and forth between ocean swimming and pool dipping. In the summer, it is a toss-up as to which is warmer, since the ocean temp is like 85. The bar at the ocean pool is also very convenient.

I have stayed at many beach locations around the world, and this is really one of the best, taking into account the hotel, size of the beach area, water temperature, privacy, crowds and amenites.

Finally,
if you like the Marriott thing and staying on the beach, the 3 best on Hilton Head are Surf Watch, Grande Ocean, and Barony Beach. Have stayed at all 3, and this is my favorite.

Room Tip: There is one building that is oceanside, with great views. But all of the rooms have nice surroundi...

I love the setup of these rooms! The pool has a splash area and then there is another pool right on the beach with a bar! Voodoo juice is great from this bar. The grounds ave ponds, ducks to feed and all types of events! Love it here

Room Tip: high floors have best views....of course

We had a fabulous time. The resort has three great pools. The beach was wonderful with the warm water but brisk waves! The fact that there were no crowds contributed to how great of a time we had. I like to seclusion of the resort. Although it is set back a ways from the beach due to the wetlands, it was a non-issue. The 24 hour shuttle always arrived before we could even make it down from our villa to the street after calling for it. It is a nice walk without beach bags and coolers. One of my favorite amenities was the onsite bike rentals: $10/day, $25/week. Much of the island is covered in bike trails. Lots of great restaurants to bike to within 2.5 miles of the resort. The room was great...Marriott quality. Hugh shower in the master bedroom with 5 shower heads. Although I am curious about the other Marriott resorts in Hilton Head (being a Marriott timeshare owner), I would gladly stay here again.

Room Tip: Would not worry about the views. We had a nice view of the lake with even the "lowest option&q...

Marriott Surf Watch is a wonderful place to stay. The room we had was so nice - view of ocean, pool, salt marsh. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay. We were right across the road from the path to the beach, so the walk wasn't bad. The pool we were staying by was more of your "family" pool - lots of kids. We enjoyed watching all the activity. We ate on our balcony every meal. That was wonderful. The staff could not be nicer! There are camp fires, smores, games, activities. They have their own movie theatre. It's a great place for kids of all ages. We can't wait to go back. The weather was glorious and you HAVE to check out LiveOac. We took a wonderful boat ride to see the dolphins. You can get info for them at the main office. They suggested them. We had a blast.

Stayed here for a week in a 3 bedroom, we were a group of 5 adults and 5 kids plus a infant.
The elevator situation is HORRIBLE. 1 elevator in our building (the 55 building) for 5 floors and not sure the number of villas on each floor. Had to wait and wait and wait.

Quite a long walk to the beach and back. There were several days the golf cart shuttles were not around much. Called 1 day to have them pick us up in our building, never showed up. Next time would choose a property closer to the beach.

A downside of the kitchen, they provide a very small trash can (for a room for 12 people).

Dryer took forever to dry even a small load of kids clothes. Had to turn on 4 times.

The kids loved the shower in the master bath.

Nice new microwave and stove.

Pools were good.
Overall, a pretty good time.

Great hotel/timeshare - newest Marriott property on Hilton Head. The hotel is in the middle of the island - a bit of a hike from the more popular Seapines end of the island. However, the resort has a great beach - which is pretty empty (park on one side and private residences on the other). Activities, restaurants, etc. are about 10 minutes away, although a Carrabas is just around the corner. BiLo, Publix and Harris Teeter are about 10 minutes in one direction and the Fresh Market is about 10-15 in the other direction.
Rooms include full kitchen with granite countertops. Master bath in this property has a shower "room" - very nice with multiple shower heads. No jacuzzi tubs (like many other older properties).
Most of the buildings on this property are well-removed from the beach - only one has an ocean view and is still at least a block walk (along a boardwalk across the wetlands). Indoor pool is central. Outdoor pools centrally and at the beach. Can get a golf-cart ride to the beach if you want. Marketplace (milk, eggs, pizza, etc) is centrally located. There is a small bar/beach restaurant at the ocean pool area. Outdoor grill areas available. Work-out facilities are good and centrally located with multiple bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills as well as a full complement of weight machines and free weights. New this year are remote control boats (on the pond), hammocks around the pond, 3 fire-pits (with wood provided) and a 14 seat theater showing 5-6 movies on a flatscreen every day (free). Single stream recycling is also new this year with collection sites at each building. Lots of activities everyday - free or small fee (~$5-10).

Room Tip: As only one building has ocean views, all are about the same.

As a newer Marriott property, this resort avoids several mistakes of older Marriott resorts, but provides a dilemma for discriminating owners who value the serenity of an Atlantic Ocean view. The large whirlpool tub is absent due to lack of owner use. The Hilton Head properties would benefit from fireplaces. Marriott’s Surf Watch eliminates the lockout units and offer two and three bedroom units. A couple should elect the two-bedroom unit because the living space is larger than in a three-bedroom unit.

We insisted on an Ocean Front unit. The insider’s viewpoint nicknames this property as “Marriott’s Surf Walk.” This is because several owners and visitors have not properly prepared themselves for this unique property. First, there really is only one building that is oceanfront. Second, it is a short walk on a boardwalk to the beach. In one sense “Marriott Surf Walk” is an apt description. Several other buildings provide serene Marshland and Atlantic Ocean views.

Given nearly 60 years of Atlantic and Pacific coast travel, I require an ocean front property, and I am willing to pay the premium cost for the view. Many of the Marriott Surf Watch building are “garden view.” These garden views provide a replica view of many tidewater areas, but fall short in terms of providing the clientele a balcony to enjoy a nice wine and sushi and a vision of the Atlantic Ocean.

I always read several guest on-line reviews, and it “cracks me up” when guests will schedule a golf cart to wheel them across the board walk to the ocean. In my view, one of the essential aesthetics of Marriott’s Surf Watch is the preservation of the ecological wetlands and creek, indigenous grasses, scrub foliage, conifers, palm, and other flora and fauna that are a prelude to the natural grandeur of the ocean.

Room Tip: Might settle for a Marsh view
