“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

I meant to write about our visit the day after we were there, but I did not. Doing so now! We went on Thursday, Oct 9, for dinner and to see Deaz Guys. What a wonderful time we had. The fried chicken, Mac n cheese and collard greens met my expectations and then some. I am hard to please when it comes to these three items, sorry we experienced this right before leaving the island. We had more fun out at this establishment than other places we have visited over the years. The staff was exceptional, welcoming and fun! The band was extremely entertaining and great musicians. This is a must for anyone that wants a great evening out. I sure miss HHI even more now. Looking forward to our next trip and Ruby Lees will be at the top of the list. Reservations are highly recommended and ours will be made before we leave Ohio. Until next time, keep on doing what you are doing!

“the north end "Jazz Corner", have your music and eat it too!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Well, had heard about Ruby Lees but was skeptical because of its odd location in an old commercial bldg. Neighborhood is safe, it simply doesn't look like a place that you would find a restaurant, perhaps a barber shop, thrift store, or animal care clinic, of which all three exist in the "mini mall"

The building looks old and is but the interior is crisp and contemporary and very clean. Went to use the bathroom about 8pm and spotless; probably cleaned within the hour. The owner, Tim Singleton, is hands on, and he is a native Islander, so if you have heard of "Singleton Beach" that is his family and I believe they have been here for generations..... .........

So I am not a huge fan of Southern cooking/soul food but my vibe is is that if you like that sort of food, then pls try this place vs Annie O's and the tremendously over-rated "lowcountry backyard" ,. I did indeed have the Shrimp and Grits, and they were awesome..... brown gravy, local shrimp (that's important) and came out piping hot with a generous portion. My tennis bud had the "Gumbo" which is like a "junk in the trunk" stew that he raved about and also came out piping hot. Would have been nice to have some corn bread/ biscuit to sop up our respective dishes but none was offered and we didn't ask.

They have local music free every night and pretty much all of the musicians have been playing around these parts for at least 15 yrs. Many of these musicians have played at the Jazz Corner, major hotels on HH for years (see below)

In all fairness to the Jazz Corner, JC has a "tour" of fairly famous, national musicians and a menu that is 4-5 star (they are the number one rated restaurant on TA, and I don't disagree with that) So in all fairness; totally different experience and price point; simply depends on what you are looking for......Jazz Corner is a legit top five HH experience, no doubt.... But if you want to watch a football game, listen to some good music and chow down a bit on local fare, give it a shot......

So check out their web site, tell Tim Bart and Ray Rippman said hello.......

“Gotta go to Ruby Lee's!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Just a fantastic place!Owners Tim Singleton and Deborah Govan ensure that you're happy. Best fried chicken, wings, shrimp and grits, Mac n cheese on the island. If you love wine, the list is fantastic and includes some high end wines to please! Entertainment nightly is the best as well, and as others have stated, make a reservation so you are not disappointed.Be *patient* when your food is ordered as well, as they make it when you order it!!The staff has been there since the opening, and are friendly, efficient, love their jobs, and are eager
to please!Worth the experience if you are
visiting, there's no other place on the island like
it.Much continued success Tim,you've "GOT THIS"!!:)
