We exchanged through Interval from our typical Hyatt property (Coconut Plantation) in Florida, which served as a point of comparison. Judging by some of the reviews here, we actually had relatively low expectations. Now having experienced the property, those reviews seem to be less about the quality of the resort and more about expectations that the resort couldn't possible meet. There are certainly still some things for Sunset Pointe to improve upon, but overall, I would certainly return here.
A couple quick things about what this resort is not so future travelers are clear. It is not beachfront. If you've looking for a Hilton Head Marriott that is beachfront, this isn't it. It does not have any onsite dining options. This complaint puzzles me anyway, as these are timeshare units equipped with full kitchens - what is the need for onsite dining? It is not brand new. The buildings are certainly older, but the rooms themselves are quite up to date.
Let me go through the strengths of the resort, then areas of improvement. As noted by others, the staff is definitely a strong suit. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and willing to help, from taking our family pictures to remembering that we had a sleeping child the one night we needed a repair done in the room. Second, the grounds of the resort are immaculate and well-kept. The pools, gazebo, and fire pit areas are gorgeous and all overlook Broad Creek. I can certainly understand that in peak season the pools might be a bit crowded, but for our Labor Day week, they were near empty. The room itself was clean and had all the amenities we needed, updated with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, standard Marriott bedding, and flat screen TVs. The non-slip tile in the entry-way, kitchen, and bathrooms is a huge plus for a family with wet children coming in from the pool or beach. Lastly, there were a large number of activities to choose from across the course of the week - I really don't see how any objective reviewer over the summer could say that this resort lacks in this area.
Three areas of improvement: the living room furniture absolutely needs updating. The couch and two chairs in our unit were worn and tired and need to be replaced. They were certainly clean and perfectly usable, but don't meet the standards of the rest of the unit. A small nit - all the doorknobs could use replacing - just look a bit old. Lastly, the Internet in our room went on and off all week, which was incredibly annoying. The staff did as much as they could to ID the problem and had the internet company come fix it, but it still went off and on even after they came. I don't know if it was just our unit, or that we were bouncing between routers, but it was really the only part of our stay which was aggravating.
Relative to our Hyatt stays, this particular property falls just below, but still worthy of the maintenance fees we pay. It had everything we needed for an enjoyable vacation, and the staff made us feel quite welcome. While not oceanfront, the views over the creek are gorgeous, and it does make for a more intimate/quieter feel to the resort. We are actually going back to Hilton Head for another stay at Marriott's Barony Beach Resort in October - it will be interesting to have that point of comparison relative to this property. I would recommend this property to others considering a Hilton Head vacation.
