“Very nice property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We were in Hilton Head SC for a professional conference and stayed at the Omni. We were very pleased as we had a nice size room, nice balcony and close to the parking lot. They had several pools there with many other activities as well. It appears that they are taking care of this property as everything seemed to be in good shape.

Room Tip: We had a nice room close to the hotel lobby and parking lot and we didn't have to navigate any s...

We went with 3 kids, there were 2 pools for families and one for adults. Nothing special about pools, service was great. We rented bikes and rode around but couldn't get to shops or anything on bikes.
It was a good vacation.

My husband and I live nearby in Savannah, GA and travel to Hilton Head several times per year. We were very disappointed in the Omni. We paid extra for an ocean view room and ended up with a view of the parking lot. We could catch a glimpse of the ocean if we looked between the trees. The elevator is tiny and not air conditioned. The hallways are not air conditioned either. There was mold in the bathroom and it appeared in need of a renovation. The rooms were large and clean. I would recommend this hotel to families as they have a nice pool for the kids as well as activities. We will not stay there again.

Room Tip: There are very few ocean view rooms that provide true views of the ocean. I would not pay extra for...

The beach area is very nice-not crowded, plenty of chairs and umbrellas. The pools are not excessively crowded; you can get chairs if you arrive around 10 or earlier. There is one walk-in pool, which is good for children. Pool areas were very clean. The condition of the rooms are what caused me to give it an "ok," rather than a "good." It rained several times while we were there, and water stood in the halls, which were open on the ends. Our AC would only cool to a certain point, but it was fine in our other two rooms. Each room had a kitchen area with a small refrigerator and microwave. The staff was excellent, however, especially the belllmen and front desk staff. There is a nice Starbucks on site with pastries and sandwiches.

Room Tip: When if rains, water stood in the hallway outside the room at the end of the hall.

Definitely glad it's a short stay at a conference discounted rate.
Positives:
1. Pool area and beach are kid-friendly. Kids had a blast with the Saturday DJ entertainment. Plenty of seating and towels.
2. Lunch by the pool is reasonably priced and delicious. Staff friendly.
3. Conference areas are well-kept and staffed.
Negatives
1. The room. Ugh. Musty. And I just adore when the handicap accessible option is thrown at the holders of a discount room rate. A bathroom without a tub or walled shower is tough with two kids. Great view of the parking lot.
2. No valet. At least not when we checked in.

As a hotel, it's not bad. Reasonable beach resort but not a five star.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view.

A great room and we really enjoyed all the pools and poolside drinks...even had an adult pool to chill out at. Grounds were well kept and the spa was wonderful. Great food as well. Top of our budget but worth the memories, right on the beach.

The Omni is situated upon one of the most beautiful pieces of real estate on Hilton Head Island with uncrowded beaches and nestled among multimillion dollar homes, a premium resort now managed with a Motel 6 mindset. This year was my fifth annual stay, and sadly will be my last.

There have been many changes since Hilton ownership, the most detrimental being the discounting of rooms to obtain full occupancy. When Hilton, the parking lot was filled with Volvos, Mercedes and minivans, however now looks like a Dollar Store as drunken guests return in the wee hours. One staggered up to the front desk asking for a taxi to the Omni, too inebriated to realize he was there.

The adult pool, once great for a dip, Pina Colada and good book, had guests smoking, one in blue sleeveless tee burning a large stogie and spitting onto the concrete. Heck, people were smoking cigars in the ocean. I suppose nothing says "you've arrived" more than snagging a discount room and pretending to be the Monopoly Man. Then there were the boom boxes. What adults own boom boxes, much less take them on vacation? A rhetorical question of course. The staff remained oblivious to it all.

For the stay we rented two bikes for $75, with three of the four tires low on air. Mentioning this to staff in charge of the bikes, he pinched the tires, agreed, and then returned to making snow cones for no one in particular, as no one was waiting. I had to find the compressor and fill them myself.

The best chance for parking is the former employee area near the south utility shed, as the employees with their little green decals now park close to the building and in every nook and cranny not precluded by shrubbery. I did manage to park close once, but an employee wedged into the grass next to my car blocking my door, so back to the south lot. I can't blame them for wanting shaded parking, but do blame management for being feckless in enforcing policy and standards, but that is a recurrent theme.

If you’re into suites, do not rent on the south building. In a stroke of genius, they put an Airstream-like mobile bathroom that you’d perhaps find at a state fair directly in front of beach-facing suites. We're talking conversational distance without raising your voice. Then again, the north side faces boom boxes, so take your pick.

All in all, my five night tab was $2,440, which would have been fair value during the Hilton era for a premium resort. During the week however, at the desk they were quoting $139 a night in effort to pack the place, and God knows what rooms were going for on Travelocity-Hotwire et al. Hint to Omni marketing: You can’t have both premium customers (much less repeat customers) and drunks staying on a dime. In the end, I paid $2,440; in return, I received a $695 experience.

Harsh? Yes, however I remember the resort as it was two years ago as baseline. Conrad Hilton's ghost is gone. The MBA's with their occupancy metrics have destroyed the experience.

Kudos though to Jason and Will at the door, five-star both.
