“Don't believe any of the bad reviews...a fantastic vacation!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2009

We just got back from a 9 night stay at the Barony in Hilton Head. We were a group of 7, including my mother, my three kids and my 18 month old granddaughter. I was quite nervous, as I had read several of the bad reviews. Based on Trip advisor reviews, I knew not to book the "garden view" rooms, even though they were the cheapest. We had the next best, the "courtyard view" rooms, and actually had a beautiful view of the ocean from our balcony. We were in the Sea Oats building, which is one of the two buildings closest to the ocean, and since we were on the 4th floor, we were above the trees in the courtyard, in a room off to the side but nearest to the ocean. So we had all of the advantages of an ocean view, without the price (which, by the way, was $600 more, and there was only one left when I booked my vacation last January). The rooms are huge- we were absolutely more then comfortable with 7 people. There are three flatscreens- the livingroom and both bedrooms. The kitchen was fully stocked, and we had everything we needed to cook. The rooms are immaculatly clean, (although my only complaint for my whole stay was housekeeping), and so are the grounds. The beds were so comfortable! The pool closest to the ocean does get crowded, but there were never any problems getting chairs, and we often didn't get out until after noon. True, the end of August is a little less busy, as many kids across the South are already back in school (we live in New York and kids don't go back until after Labor Day), so perhaps we just got lucky. The pool behind the busy pool was empty, so if you don't like crowds, it is a nice option. The beach is a 3 minute walk if you are staying in one of the 4 main buildings. The beach was spectacular. Water was perfect, and not a single jelly fish in sight all week! Instead of renting beach chairs and unbrellas, we brought down two cheapies that we bought at CVS and bought two more chairs and an umbrella from Walmart. We spent $40 bucks, which basically paid for itself the second day.
The hotel had plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. Most of the activities had a small fee attached, but nothing was overly expensive, and my kids loved the shirt tye-dying and the glass painting. There is no resturant at the Barony, but there are so many great places to eat on the island, that you won't care. I also followed Trip Advisor member suggestions, and we had several very good and very reasonable dinners. Flora's Italian Cafe was excellent (and this is a NY Italian American saying that!), and the bill was $150 for 7 people. Fiesta Fresh Mexican was some of the best Mexican that we have ever had (just bring it back to the hotel, unless you don't mind eating at a McDonald's like cafeteria). A huge delicious dinner with tons of chips, salsa, guac, and even flan for everyone for dessert was $75 dollars (and boy did we order a ton of food). Best guac and salsa, and the gringo tacos were outstanding. We also ate at L-Woods and it was really good. For the most part, though, we bought groceries at Publixs, and did a ton of grilling. The grills at the Barony are spotless, cleaned to a shine every day. The grills are not the best quality, and take a while to get hot, so plan to be there for a while if you are doing steaks or London Broil. HHI itself is just beautiful. I was worried, because we were in Edisto Island a few years ago, and that was very run down. HHI is nothing like that. Very upscle, great resturants, high end shopping, amazing golf courses, and everything is beautifully landscaped. The publix carried almost everything that we have in NY, including Italian speciality items that you would never find outside of a major metro area 5 years ago. I would go back to HHI in a heartbeat! We usually go North in the summer, but the Cape and Northern Beach resorts are getting prohibitively expensive. The Barony was under $300 a night, and for what you get, it is a steal! One complaint- Housekeeping. The rooms are cleaned beautifully upon arrival, but housekeeping does not do a heck of a lot while you are there. Often, the floor was not swept, and tubs and showers were not cleaned. Besides that, however, absolutely no complaints. The staff was amazingly helpful. If you are planning a trip to HHI, you can not do better then the Barony. We will be back!!

This was our first trip to Hilton Head. We stayed the first two nights at the Marriot Resort and Spa and then moved over to Barony Beach Club for the following 5 nights. First off let me say the lay our of this place is strange. The ocean front/view villas are on one side and then the garden villas are a ways away from them with a separate car entrance. Pros of ocean front/view villas were proximity to beach and resort activities but the cons were that that part of the resort was extremely crowded - especially the pool. We stayed in the garden villas which overlooked it's own pool which we prefered as it was always quiet, and that pool is shaded which in the summer heat we appreciated. Also, the garden villas were a one minute walk to the Westin Resort and we used their amenities with no problem. It felt like we were getting the huge room space of a timeshare resort with the added amenities of a luxury regular resort (the Westin) . This might not be everyone else's desire but we found that to be a bonus. The walk to beachfrom the garden villas via the Marriott was about 7 minutes but only about 1 minute through the Westin so even though the garden villas are set back from the Barony Beach club beach access there was easy beach access via the Westin Resort. The villas are really spacious and comfortable and clean. The bathroom cabinets were a bit outdated but that didn't bother us. There are actually three bathrooms in the units - 2 jacuzzi tubs, a huge walk in shower and also a shower/tub combo. There was a large offering of kids programs - our kids (4 & 5 yrs old) loved all the activities. Some were drop off/supervised and others you stayed with the kids. Hilton Head is beautiful with gorgeous weather, uncrowded clean beaches and a lovely calm warm ocean. We are seriously considering buying timeshare at Barony Beach and returning there every year. We did a quick timeshare preview of Marriott's Surfwatch. The units are newer and better furnished but it was quite a trek to the beach.

We returned to the Barony for a week of fun and sun. Once again, the Barony did not disappoint. The room was perfect, the service was excellent. We love the location - the quiet part of town. The property is a short drive to various restaurants and shops. The beach is right out back. The only thing missing is a restaurant. There were so many activities going on, much more than we remembered from last year. We had a blast. We plan to try for a longer stay next year.

My wife and I traded our timeshare in Orlando for the Barony Beach Club. We stayed in a two bedroom unit in the Garden Villas with another couple.

The unit was quite large and very well equipped, although the furnishings seemed a bit dated. The staff was friendly and helpful throughout. It was a 10 minute walk to get to the beach which was not really a problem, especially once we learned the shortcut through the Weston property next door. The pool at the Villas was much quieter and more relaxing than the main pool, and we spent most of our time there. There was never a problem finding lounge chairs although they were not very comfortable. I would suggest bringing your own cushions if possible.

All in all we spent a very pleasant week and would be happy to stay there again.

This is a great place for a family vacation. Roomy, nicely decorated, and well-equipped villas with 2 bedrooms, living room, dining area, full kitchen, and laundry room are just steps from the beach (as well as pools) if you stay in one of the four oceanside buildings, like we did. Staying in one of the two garden buildings would require more of a walk to the beach, although they seemed very peaceful and have their own large pool, gas grills, and putting green. The Barony Beach Club is located in Port Royal Plantation on the less frenetic end of the island, so crowds are less than one would find elsewhere. We know, because we have stayed elsewhere on Hilton Head, too. Barony Beach has tons of amenities, e.g., full-service European spa, fitness center, multiple pools and hot tubs, gas grills, shuffleboard, on-site convenience store/deli, and the Westin next door if you want to walk to a regular restaurant. We grilled out on site many evenings as the kids were having so much fun they did not want to leave. Bike paths connect you to anywhere on the island - we rented bikes at the hotel for $25 for the entire week. You can walk to tennis or 3 golf courses (not part of property). We have traveled to many beach resorts - in our mind, it is hard to beat Hilton Head Island and the Barony Beach Club. Realize that this is a vacation ownership property as opposed to a regular hotel, so daily maid service is not provided unless you pay extra, and there is no regular restaurant on site (although you can get a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, pizzas, etc. and a wide selection of beverages at a facility near the main pool as well as in the c-store/deli.

My husband and I and our adult children stayed at Barony Beach 6/28/09 - 7/5/09. We are multiple week Marriott Vacation Club owners and traded into Barony Beach. I did my research ahead of time so I expected to be put in the Garden Villas. We were given a pool view room on the 1st floor in the Jasmine building. The 1st floor is actually the 2nd floor since the parking garage is under the building. We liked being able to take the stairs to our room and not have to wait on the elevator. The villas are goregous and very spacious. The tram service to the beach is actually a golf cart. We did take the golf cart to the beach a few times. It's nice knowing that service is available. The walk to the beach is not bad at all. It's only a few minutes further of a walk than the other buildings in the main part of the resort. Unless you purchased an oceanfront room at Barony, your view will be similar to the Garden View villas, overlooking a pool or garden area, and you will still have to walk to the beach. The main pool by the beach is very small and crowded. We liked our pool in the Garden View section much better. Never a crowd or a fight for a chair. We rented an umbrella from the lifeguard in front of the beach bar and hung out there for most of the week. We could listen to the afternoon entertainment from our chairs on the beach. We planned to rent bikes and participate in some of the activities offered at the resort but just never got around to it. There are plenty of grills and picnic tables available for use. Overall, it was a relaxing vacation. I would return to Barony Beach again.

We are Vacation Club Owners and swapped into the Barony for a trip to HHI. This is our third trip to HHI and our first and last at Barony. Before we booked/swapped we looked at the Barony Marriott site and saw it said 'Atlantic Ocean on-site' so we were pretty excited.
We called and asked about the possibility of getting ocean front and were told to arrive early for our best chance. We got here at 12:00 and were asked to wait- we did until the normal check-in tim of 4 and they then placed us in the Garden Villas- across the street, beyond the Westin, with no direct beach access. We were told we could ride a tram to the beach from our building.
We have small children and elderly parents, so riding a tram would be great- if there were less of us, or more trams- so we ended up walking the 15 minutes to the beach. We also had to walk to the main buildings (15 min) for all the activities and to be near the pool with the restaurant and the bar.
The only activities on our side was a kid putting challenge and a smores making thing.
When we complained, our complaints were dismissed because the actual Barony owners get preference of ocean front and the beach villas- all others including rentals and time-share swaps get the crappy garden villas.
We were considering buying another week, but after this experience, it WILL NOT be with Marriott.
