“Way overdue for an Overhaul”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

This was our second visit in the last five years. I don't think they've dusted the place since our last visit. Seriously, I have never seen a place so run-down. The window hinges in our bathroom had a year of dust on them. Every wall had a number of unrepaired dings, and the towel ring had banged the wall so many times that there was a crescent ring in the wall as well. The hot tub in the pool area had murky brown water. Finally, one of our kids found a cheerio in his bed.

This place has potential - good bones and a good location for access to certain parts of HHI. However, if I were the owner of this hotel I would fire the management company. They're terrible.

The room was a great price for Hilton Head. The bathroom was huge. They have an evening reception with complimentary beer, wine, and snacks (from 5-7pm). They also offer a complimentary full breakfast which was so -so. The waffles and pancakes both mornings were a bit hard - like they'd been out too long. The hotel itself is on the north side of the island, which is quite a hike to the main attractions of the island such as the lighthouse, the Sea Pines resort (where Harbor Town and the Salty Dog Cafe), and the main downtown area are located. The most convenient beach access (Folly Field) is about a 7 - 10 minute drive away (depending on traffic). So, overall - really great price for Hilton Head; however, if you prefer close access to beach / attractions, I'd recommend paying a bit more for a hotel further in.

I hope few people read this as we don't want this secret to get out very far and thus it would just be too hard to book a room in the future. We just had a marvelous time at the Main Street Inn and would recommend it to our friends and family. The staff was very responsive to our needs, the inn was clean and neat and met our expectations. The recommendations from staff for places to eat and visit were spot-on. We couldn't have asked for more and then the rate we had was beyond our wildest dreams. I had a great spa experience with Miss Molly so don't forgot to consider pampering yourself when you visit. Oh and yes breakfast was to die for.

my boyfriend and i visited HHI for NYE this past year. we decided to keep it low key and i found a deal for this inn for around $100 a night! i saw pictures and couldn't pass it up!! in person is even more beautiful than the pictures!!! from 4-7 every night they have a free happy hour of beer and wine. the staff is super friendly and will give you to go cups if you'd rather hang out in your room. each room overlooks a beautiful fountain/pool. they also have a hot tub that runs throughout the night! the rooms are Victorian but everything inside is up to date and clean!! the only slight downfall (and i say slight because we didn't care a less) was that the inn was a little of a drive to the bars, restaurants on HHI. in HHI they do cabs by zoning, so it cost $16 a cab ride to get to the bars and out to eat. GREAT PLACE, wouldn't have changed it for the world!

Nice features include the gardens and pool, the exterior and the design are quite picturesque. The rooms however are in real need of updating, cleaning and repainting. It is appalling to find dirty dusty lamps, soiled shades, dirty walls in the bathroom. The amenities have gone as well, no bathrobes, the mint shampoo, the nice coffee mugs have all gone by the wayside. Needed is new pillows, blankets, some good cleaning!! Both our backs hurt from the old beds. Breakfast is ok for pre made eggs and lots of carbs. On the first floor the lights shine right into the rooms so don't stay there go up a floor. Better deals are out there!

Room Tip: Pick second floor if you can! Or stay elsewhere

We were in a Queen Room with no fireplace. It was a nice room but the water coming out of the tap was just plain foul and the bathroom had a very unpleasant smell. It had a very metallic taste and was slightly discolored. At first we thought this was how all of Hilton Head water was so we accepted it and used our bottled water to drink and brush our teeth.

Then next day we asked at the desk and the young lady said there was nothing she could do. After dining out we realized that other water on the Island was okay so the next day we again approached the desk to talk to a different young lady who agreed to move us midweek.

We moved into a Queen Fireplace which was very nice and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience of the fire as it was a bit chilly in the evenings. (The fireplaces are gas but manually turned on when a wall switch would make more sense). The water in this room was fine. The next day we talked to yet another person at the desk. (So far there had been a different person every day). This person finally admitted that they knew there was a water problem but that it was not limited to just one room, or the same room every time. With that information all I can say is if you experience funky water do NOT accept it and demand another room!

The breakfast served daily was good and had at least one item change daily. It certainly is a cost savings so you can use your money for dinner. Happy Hour from 5 to 7 got you 2 beers or glasses of wine. There were also cookies whcih were good but a strange sweet choice with alcohol. I would have much preferred fruit and cheese. There is a Harris Teeter within walking distance so we did get some cheese to enjoy with our drinks.

Each room has a small fridge but no microwave, which would be nice for reheating leftovers from dinner. Also, apparently only the King rooms have a jacuzzi but the bathroom is so large this property could easlly add those to every room.

If our room had a jacuzzi, a microwave, and there were no water problems, I would have rated this property as excellent.

Room Tip: If it is cold, get a fireplace!

I booked this property for my wife and kids. After reading the reviews online and seeing it is rated 4.5 stars, they were all excited and had high expectations. We stay in hotels 2 weekends a month, so we are very we have seen it all. The pictures and reviews are totally not what this property is. The rooms are minuscule, and very antiquated. Totally in need of a makeover. We requested a roll away which was impossible to open and too built for a doll not a human. The staff was receptive to this issue and offered a slightly larger room. In the morning everyone's back was hurting from the extremely hard bed. We went to breakfast only to find a poor selection of stale cereal and soil milk. One of my child's back was so sore from the bed that we checked out early and went home. From someone who has stayed at over 80 properties so far this year, this one ranked 80th in my book. The Best Western was even better.(69.00 a night). Again, the staff was very nice and receptive, but there isn't much they could due since the property itself if so poor. Any other property in Hilton Head probably better.

Room Tip: yes stay at any other hotel
