“Not a high end property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

I booked Sonesta HH for 5 nights kind of last minute (aug 20 - 25), based on reviews and the fact that it was the #1 rated ocean resort on this site. I was thinking - hey, HH is a major ocean resort destination, you can't go wrong with #1, right? I did not hate the hotel, but it was not what I expected. First, do not spend money for anything other than the base view. The hotel is 750ft from the ocean and only 5 stories - so you are not getting a materially better view for the $ if you pay up.

The structure of this hotel is pretty old - Sonesta took over another brand hotel and renovated a few years ago (to my knowledge). This is reflected in the rooms, which are pretty tiny for the money, but updated nicely. Strange things are in every corner though, like the bathroom door was noticeably not standard width. We were travelling with my 15 month old daughter. The walls are so poorly sound proofed that the people next door kept waking her up even though they weren't being very loud. Also, the resort has such a concentration of families, that the pool was actually pretty dangerous for her, with kids running in and out of the children's end. Speaking of the pool, I found it to be an acceptable size, but my understanding from talking with staff was the hotel was not 100% full, and when it is the pool can't accommodate everyone. This could be important because every day we were there was a jelly fish warning at the beach (and I actually was stung sitting in 6 inches of water!), so you will want the pool to be a viable option every day. Summary - the pool is nice, but not too big, and ideal if you are travelling with kids aged 6-12. The rooms are small, poorly sound proofed, but nicely updated.

I found the hotel staff to be very friendly. People are trying their best to please you, which obviously is nice. I found the other guests to be somewhat annoying - maybe this is my NYC snobbery kicking in, but when you see a hotel guest arguing at checkout over a $20 food voucher, this does not scream "#1 rated beach resort at Hilton head", does it? The place was generally clean, with some minor exceptions. We were bathing my daughter twice a day with the pool/ocean/sunscreen and whatnot, and the ring around the tub was scrubbed clean by housekeeping without our asking midway through the stay - you usually do not see that type of detail at most resorts.

The worst part of this place is the food options. Breakfast was decent, although one morning they managed to screw up oatmeal, which I thought was impossible to do (a pinch of salt tasted more like a gallon of salt...). But lunch, dinner, poolside are a disaster. There is an outdoor poolside restaurant, a poolside bar with bar food, and a dining room restaurant. Every meal we had was mediocre or below average. The "specialty drinks" at the pool bar reminded me of some of my fraternity creations from yesteryear. It presents a problem because of the nature of HH and its gated community setup. You can't just walk down the road and hit "the center of town" for a meal. My wife and I got creative with a very convenient bike rental they have near the pool and biked to better lunch spots with the baby, but not everyone wants to get on a bike when its 93 degrees and humid.

In all, this is a good spot if you are a family of 4 with kids aged 6-12 who want to have a great pool experience with other kids, and you are willing to get in the car every night to get to nighttime activities like Harbour Town, etc. If you are a young couple with no kids, or older empty nesters, do not come here.

Room Tip: Do not spend the money for a horizon view room

On average a pleasant experience. Personnel always friendly and helpful. Personnel were very knowledgeable about the local area, and provided suggestions for entertainment and shopping. The nickel and dime $18 service fee was the only real negative issue about my stay at this resort.

Me and my husband decided last minute to take an overnight beach trip to Hilton Head and booked our room last minute. All I can say is the Sonesta was a beautiful resort! It was right on the beach with bathrooms right at the beach access so you didnt have to trek back to your room if you need the facilities. They had storage for your beach chairs and toys so you didnt have to lug them back to your room. The pool areas were really nice plenty of lounge chairs. The lobby and the hotel itself were very clean and beautifully decorated. The room we had was a king suite and it was very large, clean and just beautiful. The bed was so comfy me and my hubby didnt want to get up the next day and actually slept in which is something he never does. The bathroom was immaculately clean and very large. I would absolutely stay at this resort again with no doubts. The front desk clerks were always very friendly and polite. I will say that even though the resort is beach side from our room you couldnt see the beach because of the trees..but if you were in a room higher up I think the view would be lovely. The only 2 complainst I have is that breakfast in the hotel was quite expensive and the service was slow and it seemed to take forever for our food to come. If your gonna pay the prices for the breakfast I suggest paying the extra room service charge and just order in honestly. And the saturday evening we were there they had a wedding reception going on and it seemed the wedding guests were given the run of the parking lot so we ended up having to park way out in the middle of no where and trek back to the resort.

Room Tip: If you want a view get a higher floor.

We used a travel site deal for four nights, with the resort fee ($18/day) and buffet breakfast ($45/day) rolled into a $200/night Sun to Weds rate. It is nicely landscaped smaller resort, with access to a broad public beach by a 200 yard path. The room was large and comfortable. Food and drink were pricey, and restaurant quality was just average. We ate three dinners offsite, and there are many restaurants within five miles.

We are Palace Resort members in Mexico, and preferred places like Playacar Palace and the Moon Palace to this facility. However, we live a 4+ hour drive away in NC, so no plane flight was a plus for a Sonesta visit.

Room Tip: Monday nights at Reilly's Restaurant has $12 full Maine lobsters. A must if you're on the i...

The hotel was very nice. Nicely decorated, very modern decor. Staff was friendly. When I went there were a ton of families with kids there which does not bother me but may annoy some other folks looking for a more adult/romantic experience. The food at the restaurants was good but pricey. The drinks at the bar were also good but very expensive in my opinion. The beach was very nice, great location. The pool area was very crowded, probably due to the extreme heat. Overall I had a great stay at this hotel and would go back. The only thing I could complain about was parking. There were not enough spots and it was not fun circling around trying to find a spot. Despite this I still give this hotel 2 thumbs up.

Just a great place to relax and unwind, ehgaging service levels from the valet team to the bell staff. Enjoyed time with Kathy Prince and Jay the GM, The property is in great shape and has a great location with the ocean steps away from the resort. Live music in the lobby Friday night made for a great place to hangout with kids and friends, awesome stay!

This is now our go-to-hotel for a weekend get away at Hilton Head. It was a hot weekend and we really enjoyed the shade pool in the middle of the day. Nice little walk to pretty beach. You won't be disappointed!
