“Hilton Head Sonesta”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed today NEW

Loved this hotel! As soon as you walk in the updated interior invites you in. The rooms were extremely clean and the beds were relaxing. We loved all of the outdoor areas and the beach was just a short walk from the pool. Stayed our first night at the Marriott Resort and it was a nightmare! Mold on the walls and lampshades. It took showing us five different rooms before management found one without mold growing in the room. The Sonesta was fantastic

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean. The beds were so soft... like sleeping on clouds. We had a great time at the pool and at the beach. We picked up a few souvenirs from the gift shop, which offered a wide variety of items. The service was great all week and we would definitely stay here again! We had no complaints at all!

We would have given our overall experience a two-star rating. However, due to the professionalism of hotel management, we are giving our experience at the hotel a three star.

We booked a five night stay at Sonesta Resort Hilton Head based on glowing reviews and beautiful photos on the hotel website. We stayed there in July 2014 -- at the height of summer vacation for school kids.

This resort is extremely kid-friendly and caters very much to children and their families - which was not what we were envisioning. The pool was relatively small for the size of the resort and overtaken by children from about 8 AM until 10 PM. There were not enough poolside seating accommodations, and the pool bar had loud dance music playing during the entire day until about 8 PM.

We did not find the atmosphere relaxing in the least.

When we brought up our dissatisfaction with hotel management, they did their best to try to accommodate us. They offered an upgrade to a gardenview room -- but not the bed type requested. We could also hear pool commotion from the room. Additionally, the guest services manager (Lisa, who was absolutely phenomenal), provided us with a higher level of personalized service near the pool. These provisions made our stay so much more relaxing and enjoyable.

The pool staff were courteous and attentive and were willing to take care of us. All of the hotel staff greeted us with smiles and did their best to help us.

The resort itself is beautiful, but moderate in size. It is located next to the beach. All of the beaches on Hilton Head are public beaches. And umbrella + 2 chairs daily rental is $32 for the first day, and $20 thereafter. The beach chair fees can be placed directly on room charges if purchased from the lifeguard on the beach right outside the resort. We found the beach exceedingly crowded right near the resort but found calmer beach areas further to the left of the resort.

The hotel itself is conveniently located within a very secure "plantation" community. We found it easy to explore the island from the hotel.

The rooms were modern, newly updated, and very spacious -- we had a king size room. HOWEVER. The mattress was sagging on both sides, and we caution anyone with back issues or special sleep needs about this. We would have otherwise given an excellent score for the room were it not for the terrible mattress.

Smart TV was provided, but the remote did not really have compatibility with the smart features. General Wifi was slow at times. We were guaranteed a "higher speed" internet because we are Sonesta Members - but this was not available during the entire stay.

The A/C broke in the entire hotel one night for a few hours. We were comped resort fees (~$16 for that night).

Overall, I would stay here again with kids in tow OR anytime kids are in school. Great service.

Room Tip: You will hear pool noise from any of the garden view or pool side rooms. We chose to stay put in st...

Our stay at the Sonnesta was incredible! We were upgraded to a room here from a Living Social certificate and were amazed! Only complaint was parking shortage (too many valet spots) and no cart racks for luggage without a bellman helping you.

Stayed 4 nights (Wed - Sat) via Priceline Express. They never mentioned Priceline or treated us any different than a full priced guest.

PROS: Updated clean rooms with comfortable beds, quiet a/c, balcony, large TV, large chair converted to a pull-out twin bed, brought extra towels and blanket when asked, open and airy lobby with live music weekend nights, coolest temp. lobby I have ever been in was nice when coming in from the hot muggy outdoors, beach area busy but nice, poolside kid movie in evening, pool had zero depth end for the little ones, grounds were very nice, room safe, iron, blow dryer. We did not find parking to be a problem and was free (two lots...one very close and one not too far), convenient location next to Van der Meer Tennis.

CONS: Queen beds were "short" queens, a little noisy sometimes from the echo of people in the open lobby/bar area (room hallways are open to the multi-story lobby), cable TV did not have a TV guide channel (could request a channel list but no guide as to what was on), pool was just okay for older kids and a bit crowded (lots of open "natural" area with ponds though), hot tub by covered pool was small, view from our 5th floor balcony was mostly of roof top air conditioners, but we could actually see the ocean if we tried hard enough (not billed as ocean view anyway so a bonus really), $20 per night "resort" fee. We knew about this in advance so not upset but still seems a little silly and misleading. If it is mandatory then it should be in the room rate. Internet seemed to be free but was very slow so relied on phone data.

Overall and excellent and updated place to stay. Every staff member we came in contact with could not have been nicer. Just a few quirks like the lack of a TV guide, lack of pay-per-view movies (unless we just missed it somehow) and the short queens. Just found it odd that you could watch YouTube on the TV but you couldn't find out what was on regular TV channels.

A scheduled vacation to the Caribbean was cancelled at the last minute, so we needed someplace to getaway to on short notice. Sonesta Resort had availability - so we decided to head to Hilton Head. The staff is great, the amenities are great and the location (access to the beach) is awesome. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely look at the resort when visiting HH in the future.

This resort definitely exceeded our expectations...It has a great pool, bar & beach area that is family friendly and very secluded. Go visit Steve at the pool bar & he will take care of you! Will be back!
