“Nicely Renovated”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

Although not to my personal liking, the lovely renovations have returned this hotel to its former glory and then some. Staff is warm and welcoming and very quick to make certain your stay is pleasant, every day you are there.
Rooms are cozy and comfortable. The room now includes a refrigerator but still no microwave. The room's Keurig coffee pot was most disappointig as this machine makes coffee to weak for our preference. Coffee is served in the lobby all day long. And its better coffee. Although I prefer a room with a King bed we got 2 Queens that were just fine. The room is large enough that the 2 beds don't impede comfort.
The gym is almost unchanged since the Crown Plaza days and still needs more equipment for the size of this hotel. There were waiting lines for the treadmills every day. This room is just to small to accomodate the number of guests who want to utilize it. And there isn't enough equipment. Its been like that for all of our 4 stays here.
The "new" pools are lovely as is the new hot tub. The patio and deck areas are very inviting although I personally don't care to sit on the outdoor "bedding" with sheets used by other guests that are located around the pool area. It does offer a nice Carribean feel.
The restaurants are pricey but the food is good and portions are ample. Ambiance is very quiet and the service a bit slow. A very relaxing atmosphere overall. If you have a time schedule, better let the waitstaff know ahead of time. We had no problems with any of our bills as is mentioned in other reviews. They seem to have corrected those issues. I have always enjoyed shopping in the hotel gift shop but the prices are so high now that I just looked. Oh well!
We will definitely look forward to returning to this lovely hotel.

We stayed at this property years ago before Sonesta took it over. You would not recognize the property, they did a wonderful job updating. Some of the remodeling touches look a little on the cheap side for the sake of saving a few dollars, but for the most part ... well done. ( We are picky ... a builder and a decorator)

Every member of the staff that we encountered was wonderful. You will be blessed if your first encounter is with Jermaine out front. The bar staff is delightful and goes way out of their way to please.

Our room was quiet and clean and it is always nice to have a large counter in the bathroom that can handle the needs of two.

Breakfast was ok. The buffett would be nice for those with a big appetite, but we chose the menu that suited us. The food was good, but nothing out of the ordinary.

We noticed a few pets on the property, so it is obviously pet friendly.

Easy check-in and check-out with very helpful and friendly staff.

This being my first trip to the ocean, I could not asked for a better place to stay or experience. We did not have reservations as we were not sure what would be available when we arrived on Hilton Head Island. We did have a couple ideas. Our first stop was the Sonesta and they were very helpful, we arrived at 11:00 am and not only did they rooms available we were able to check in right then. We spent 2 nights, the room was very nice, clean and we had best night sleep on their beds. The staff and the entire place was outstanding! We stayed during the third week on October the weather was great for the most part. We would highly recommend.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Sonesta Resort on HIlton Head Island. The room was extremely spacious with a king size bed, love seat, small balcony and standard bathroom. The furnishings and hotel/resort itself has a modern/contemporary beach theme throughout (looks like a newly remodeled place) and is very well kept. There's two pools, and a jacuzzi and has direct beach access. The grounds have bike rentals and hammocks for lounging. There's a bar and restaurant, but we didn't go during our stay. We did get room service breakfast, which I thought was moderately priced and very delicious. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much as it was a splurge of a weekend during the town's of-fseason.

Room Tip: We had a garden view room that overlooked the pool area; it's worth the splurge if you plan on s...

Overall the Sonesta is great. The outside of the building itself is somewhat ugly but the whole place has been recently renovated and they have done a really good job. Our room (although it had an ugly view of air-conditioning units- it was the cheapest room type) was really spacious with a Kin size bed and a nice sofa with two foot stools for us to lounge on. The room had lovely decoration and was clean and very well appointed with a huge flat screen TV. Staff were generally very warm and helpful and we were given a late checkout for no extra fee.

The pool area is nice and the pool is very warm which is great of you are visiting on the shoulder season like we were.

However there are two things that they really need to improve:

1. First the music around the pool area is far too loud and does not create a relaxing atmosphere, please just tone it down a bit.

2. My main concern was with the Heywards restaurant. We arrived on a Friday and decided to eat in. My husband had the Seafood buffet but as I do not eat seafood I ordered off the menu. When we arrived in the restaurant there were not that many tables occupied but it was clear that those that were unoccupied were previously occupied as they were littered with dirty dishes and remained covered in dirty dishes throughout our meal. I have never seen staff so bad at clearing tables especially when they did not seem to be busy as most people were having the buffet so they were not required to actually wait on people very much. This created an unpleasant atmosphere to eat in and not what I would expect for a quality hotel restaurant. This was only reinforced in the morning when we went down to breakfast (which was included in our room rate) to be told there would be a 30 min wait for a table. In fact just as we were told this we were then told that there was a free table. As I walked in I was shocked to see that less than 50% of the tabled were occupied but the tables weren't ready just because they had not been cleared. To keep customers waiting just because you have not cleared tables promptly is unacceptable and not what I would expect of a quality establishment. In fact I have never seen another restaurant anywhere in the world (high end or low end) so poor at clearing tables.

On the plus side we ate the following evening at a local restaurant called the Studio. The food here was great and staff were lovely and attentive and it was better value than the hotel restaurant. At present I recommend not eating in the hotel restaurant.

What a beautiful hotel and grounds this is a real pearl inside a plantage and totally a beach property
We got this hotel true hotwire and when we got it I was a bit piffed out since I thought I would get the omni , but I didnt need to worry we got there around 3 pm and got a great warm welcoming from the staf and a nice room with a balcony oh the view lets not talk about that , it could probably have been a better view , but not going on there anyway since we wanted to go to the beach passing the beautiful lobby with hanging coloured stones in the room and true the pool and true the garden and then we was at the beach , lovely and it was lovely to swim in the sea again this year , afterwards we had a lovely time around the pool the girls in the pool of course and husbond and me enjoyed the drink from the pool bar , it was totally relaxing time for us all, after pool time was over for that day , we got up and changed and showered in the nice bathroom we had and went downstairs for dinner jummy food they have here aswell
Understood they have both Spa and Kids activitys we just came to late for the kids activity that day , but I am sure it would be fun , all the people working here seemed like they cared for their job and the guests , wish we could have stayed longer , perhaps next time we go we will stay some more days

Room Tip: Depending on how much time You will be looking at the view i would perhaps ask for a ocean view

The Sonesta was a very pleasant surprise. Everything was clean and newly renovated. Very well kept up and the color scheme was very chic. Make sure to have a spa treatment while staying. The 50 minute massage was a little slice of heaven. We would stay there again for certain.

Room Tip: Garden rooms have a distorted view of the lovely pool area. Avoid the Garden rooms, upgrade for a f...
