We spent five nights in October 2012 at Royal Dunes Resort. Royal Dunes continues to be our favorite timeshare resort on Hilton Head. The complex is located in Port Royal Plantation and consists of four buildings with three or four floors each. Each building has an elevator and plenty of luggage carts. You use a key card to access the hallway where the doors to the units are located. Then use the key card again to access your unit.
The decor was stylishly upgraded several years back and the new furnishings, carpet, and drapes in the living room and dining room area do not yet show any wear and tear. Each unit consists of three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms are spacious Master suites with en suite baths. The third bedroom is small and has twin beds and a bath conveniently located across the hall. The mattresses were nice and firm and in good shape and seemed to have little wear. Each bedroom has a television, some of them new and, in our unit, an older model in the twin bedroom. However, the living room had a nice wall-mounted flat screen with DVD player and a CD/radio. We had three couples in our group, and we never felt crowded. There were a variety of pots, pans, casseroles, and storage containers to accommodate any cooking one may want to do. The pans all seemed new (T-Fal) with very little evidence of use. The dining table roomily accommodated six people and there were two bar chairs at the kitchen counter.
All units have a balcony with a table and four chairs. The resort does not offer many on-site activities. Organized activities were a breakfast combined with a presentation on local attractions and a luncheon/cookout. The resort has a pool, a shuffleboard area, and a cornhole area.
The resort staff is one of the friendliest we’ve encountered. We got a nail in our tire and one of the staff members offered to take our tire off and go have it repaired. (Fortunately, we had enough air in the tire to get to the tire repair center the staff recommended.)
It is a bit of a walk to the beach. For those who are in exercise mode, the walk is not difficult at all. However, if you are carrying beach chairs, umbrellas, children, etc., the walk will be a bit tiring. The resort shuttle will drive you to the beach in an oversized golf cart, or you can drive yourself as there is a large parking area at the beach access. However, about half of the beach parking is for vehicles with a parking permit and half is metered parking for visitors. I don't know how crowded the parking lot gets in the summer, but it was nearly empty in early October.
