I was the one driving across the bridge on to the island at the start of our vacation that said, and I quote....
"Oh my gosh, look at all of those people out in kayaks! I would NEVER do that, I would be scared to death!"
I have never been one to 'love' water - it was always a source of anxiety for me. I CAN swim reasonably well, but if I can't touch the bottom... pool, ocean, lake - doesn't matter... I freak out a little.
Well, a few days into our vacation (it was my wife and I, mother in law, and then my brother, his wife and their 3.5 year old son) by brother says "I would really like to go kayaking, but I don't want to do it by myself..."
And then it was on - do I offer to go, do I say well maybe when your son is older..... you know - all the excuses.
I offered to go, I was a little reluctant for one major reason... I knew I was going to tip the darn thing and were going to have to swim back to the marina! HAHA
I did some searching on like and found Water-Dog's website and they seemed to offer a great experience at a good value. So I call and make the reservation and the individual I spoke to, Lisa, could not have been more friendly and reassuring - and she explained how marina provides very easy access and it is very simple to get in the kayak - So I was at ease... until the morning of!
We arrive as suggested at least 1/2 hour early and we check in. The marina can be a little tough to find - just when you think you've gone to far, you're almost there!
Restrooms are available, as are snack and drink items for purchase.
We were directed to put life vests on and gather over by a picnic table for a brief 'how to' session.
The guide for our group was great - he explained everything, especially that we would be much better off in a double kayak because of how high the tides were that day, and that the entire way back to the marina we would be paddling against the current - and that can take some significant man-power to do efficiently. So we opted for the double, and certainly didn't regret it!
I have to be honest, I was expecting more of a 'safety' briefing on what to do if you flip your vessel... but that didn't happen - and it made me a little nervous.
But anyway - after our brief overview of how to operate a kayak and navigate through marsh grass and such, our group was on our way down to the dock!
Getting in was MUCH simpler than I thought it would be thanks to the patience and understanding guide. My brother and I were the first two two get in our vessel - so we had a few extra minutes to adjust to the feeling of sitting on water - definitely an uneasy feeling for me at first, there were a few moment of panic, that's for sure.
Before long everyone was in their kayak paddling away - and our guide rushed a head of the group to show us the way - he explained things along the way, sometimes it was a little difficult to hear him, but it wasn't a big issue.
Our tour was right at two hours long, and we had a great time!
I have to admit that I really would LOVE to go again on our next trip. I really enjoyed the experience, I overcame my fear and broadened my horizons!
If you have been a little uneasy about it, give them a call - they explained everything to well!
A great operation, and a good value!
Thanks for a great experience, Water-Dog Outfitter!
