How this restaurant ever achieved a number one rating in HHI I have no idea...We have been here a week and every place we have eaten has been better than this (yes even the buffet dinner cruise). Our experience at Vine (which is supposedly number two) was so much better than this as to be beyond comparison. My assumption is Jazz Corner is highly rated for the music...if so, it should be in the attraction category on here.
Where do I start....ok..the waiter was absolutely rude. When I go to a nice restaurant (the number one rated) I have high expectations and a pet peeve, I do not like to be referred to us 'you guys'. When the waiter did, I asked him if he would not and that certainly my wife was not a guy! His reply was that he would "take it under consideration". My wife wanted to leave then but I wanted to stay to hear the music and dine on the food rated the best in HHI! As I told my wife what the waiter forgot is I get to write on the check last! Turns out she was right. We should have left.
This place is really about the music. They have a card on the tables that says" out of consideration for the performers please do not talk while the performers are playing"! Really?? I am paying for an evening out with my wife and we are not allowed to have a conversation over dinner? So we really went to a "concert" and they served food!
About the food....the fish was overcooked. I guess that is why it took so long to come out. It takes that long to thoroughly ruin a piece of halibut. My wife ordered the scallops wrapped in prosciutto. Whatever the meat was that wrapped the scallops was so salty as to make the scallops inedible. It certainly was not top quality Italian ham.
The seating is remarkable..half of the people are seated on one side of a table for two against a wall, right next to another couple seated the same way. This seating arrangement is about the performers. Try eating a meal for two on one side of a small round table for two....but hey you can sit silently, in the dark and see the band! OH yeah... it is so dark you cannot see your food...again for benefit of the performers...not the folks needing flash lights to eat...yep..the waiter offered me one!
The owner, I presume since she never introduced herself, came by our table. She thanked us for coming. i decided to share my thoughts with her....she looked shocked and actually defended the waiter in her words " I find that surprising since he has been with us a long time".
I have found this attitude to be ingrained in a few highly rated restaurants...it is almost the sort of snootiness, surliness and disregard for the customer that you see in Manhattan on occasion....We do not have to "win your business, look at our rating". I guess we were not worthy!
I am sure at times they have good music....we had the "house band" which was worth the $5 cover and that was about all...if you want good jazz you probably need to go when they have a other performers. If you want good food go eat somewhere else.
In my opinion if you are a 'foodie' and want a quality dining experience there are many better options on HHI. The last thing I wrote on the check was....the waiter's tip " was under consideration".
