After seeing cookbooks by this restaurant in Charleston I expected that my wife and I were in for a treat. Wrong. I am continually amazed at just how far Greenville restaurants have to catch up in order to match those in Charleston. We sat at a quaint table in the middle of the restaurant, and I must say that the atmosphere was quite nice. I enjoyed the way we were able to view the kitchen throughout the meal, and our server (while very disinterested) was knowledgeable. I suppose because were are in our late twenties he expected a lesser tip at the meals conclusion.
What was most disappointing was the food. I ordered meatloaf with a side of veggies, because this is the south - meatloaf is done right in the south, and it was summer so I expected the veggies to be fresh. Wow. What I recieved was something so bland, I could have just as easily heated a lean cuisine and have not noticed. The meatloaf had little taste, and I would dare the chef to convice me that the vegetables weren't frozen. My wife enjoyed her meal, but so often in Greenville I am disgusted at how pretentious the prices are compared to the food. Our final bill was around 85 dollars. $85 for bad meatloaf and frozen vegetables? Needless to say I won't be back. Rather than focusing on being the restaurant of Greenville's "new south" I would suggest that Soby's learn to focus on the old south and prepare food with flavor.
