“Very Informative”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

I'm from New York and I'd really never given a thought to rice plantations. Not sure I had ever heard of them. This local museum does a great job of informing and teaching about the history of rice growing in South Carolina. I bought bags of their homegrown rice and now purchase it regularly over the internet - it's really great, unique rice.

“Provides a slice of life befroe the Civil War.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

The museum seems to have been pulled together from an eclectic gathering of maps, artifacts, and historical documents. It did provide an interesting overview of the rice culture before the War Between the States. The docent was OK but could have been more excited about the information she imparted.

“Interesting, but ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2012

We decided to tour the rice museum based on the other reviews. It was interesting, but took too long. From the time we went in to buy the tickets, until the tour ended, it was almost 2 hours. No, the museum wasn't very large, but there was one lady who conducted the tours and she was doing one (two people). The tour is suppose to be self-guided, but you are actually taken from one building to the next as a group. There were two of us, and four in another party. The lady leading the tour was delightful, but she couldn't answer questions people in the other group asked about basic rice growing techniques. The first building should have taken about 10-15 minutes (several dioramas), but you couldn't move on to the next building until everyone was finished (so much for self-guided). The second building was actually the first building where you bought the tickets. It housed the remains of an old wooden boat that was an important find to the history of shipbuilding. This was very interesting. A fifteen minute documentary was also shown. The second floor held artifacts from the 1800s. The entire tour should have taken 45 minutes to an hour, not the two we spent. I don't know if different people lead the tour on different days, but if so, that may have had something to do with our experience. I also found the $7.00 per person a little high for what they offered. There are a fair amount of steps you have to climb, so it is not accessible for handicapped.

“Fascinating information about South Carolina's history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2012

We had no idea that rice was the premier crop for South Carolina in the 1700's through 1800's. Brief tour is very informative, and the gift shop provides a lovely mix of historical and present day items, including rice to purchase.

“Worth a short visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

It is best for those fascinated with Georgetown history. It was a short tour, but worth it if you set your expectations right. It's a small museum.
