Chef specialties include Herb-crusted Grouper, McClellanville Crab Cakes and Twin Filets of Beef with Blue Cheese ButterThe River Room is located in the historic J.B. Steel Building. In 1888 when the J.B. Steele Building opened, it housed two businesses known as the Steele-Moses stores. Downstairs, customers inspected dry goods and groceries displayed on massive hardwood counters, and upstairs they could be fitted for custom-made hats.Today, the building’s history is evident throughout and is enhanced with tasteful nostalgic décor. The dining room extends 50 feet into the Sampit River; its panoramic windows offer expansive harbor views. Nautical and turn-of-the-century antiques are on display, and an intimate bar showcases the restaurant’s wine collection.Children will surely make a beeline for the giant reef aquarium filled with colorful sea life.

“Don't take your kids here!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2008

Our family of 6 traveled from Pawley's Island on a cloudy/rainy Friday afternoon just to see Historic Georgetown. We have been visiting this part of the coast for many years and had never been "into" Georgetown. We decided that the River Room would be a nice place on the water to have lunch. We were seated quickly and when I asked the girl at the front about a children's menu, I was told that they did not have one but would do 1/2 portions for our children.
Our waitress....who was NOTHING but RUDE quickly informed me that they did NO SUCH THING!!! We were rushed thru our meal...apparently she did not want to bother with our children. The food was ok...nothing great. We will NOT RETURN HERE!!!! Big Tuna up the street is supposed to be fabulous...and Thomas' Cafe.
Stay away from the River room....or leave your kids at the condo!!!!

“no more than average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2008

The menu is the same as 90% of other restaurants in the area and it's yet another case of quantity over quality. Service was friendly as ever but they completed forgot to bring the appertizer we ordered!

Best option is to pop a few doors down and visit Big Tuna instead

“Wonderful Meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2006

I was advised by our bed and breakfast hosts that the Rice Paddy or the River Room were the best choices downtown. I chose the River Room after looking at both menus and seeing that they served bread pudding. Besides the regular menu they offered a lengthy "specials" menu with fresh fish choices. The decor was nautical and the atmosphere such that jeans or a cocktail dress would be equally appropriate. We started with bacon wrapped scallops which were heavenly. I had a grouper special and my husband ordered steak. Both were excellent and the portions were generous. I finished, of course, with the bread pudding which was amazing. Our waitress was attentive but not overly so.
As we were leaving we admired the huge salt water fish tank. The only way the evening could be improved is if we had the table next to it.

“Casual, but great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2006

We went to the restaurant right after a 3-hour sailing trip, and didn't have to worry about being underdressed. It was casual enough to be comfortable, but dressing up a little was fine, too.

The service was fast and excellent, and the dishes offered were very tasty. We wanted dessert, but just didn't have room after the generous portions of the entree, so decided to order dessert "to go". Our server was a sweetheart, and when she didn't find any peanut butter pie portioned out, made up two styrofoam containers of the pie and embellished them herself. BTW, that pie is RICH! It takes about a glass of water to get it down!

The aquarium in the dining area keeps little ones mesmerized while waiting for the food, and I found it entertaining, too.

Can't wait for our next trip to the area so we can dine there again!

“The BEST crabcakes on the East Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2005

We stopped at the River Room while bringing a sloop north from Charleston. My wife had the McClellanville crabcakes, and loved them. This started our quest for crab cakes along the Eastern Seaboard on our trip north, all the way to New England. The crab cakes at the River Room, as well as the ambiance and service, were the best we received anywhere on the East Coast. If we ever are in the area again, we will be sure to stop in because we think that they have the BEST CRABCAKES ON THE EAST COAST.
