“Condo 204 and Dunes Realty”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We rented condo 204 the week of Aug.31 thru Sept 7, 2013. The doors locks were not working(1 on front door, 1 on sliding glass door. Room was dirty(had to have housecleaning come and re-clean).King bed had duct tape holding frame together. Slats missing from bedroom sliding glass door(were told that maint. would be in next day and fix..they never came). They came and fixed locks 1st night..not slats (after they left only 1 worked and the second if you locked as you were leaving), we had to place door against door. Phone did not work..Dunes Realty replaced but problem was with the phone service, so we never had a phone. My Husband ended up taking slats off living room blinds so we could have a somewhat dark bedroom at night. This is our 3rd time renting at Atalaya (we used room 205 on both previous occasions) and using Dunes Realty. We will NEVER rent at Atalaya Towers again and our iffy if we will use Dunes Realty again. Also Elevator was not working 1 night and 3 other nights only 1 was working(both kept breaking down.) This place has become very run down and it looks like they have given up trying to up-date, or keep the maintenance up here. I loved this place at 1 time...this was the worst experience I have ever had.

We were very pleased with the location but that was about it. The condo was filthy. The hall bathroom was so dirty we had to go buy cleaning supplies just to make ourselves feel better. The coffee table was a footstool with a glass top, and the washer and dryer was located under the kitchen counter. We had to children fall very hard because the dryer put off steam on to the kitchen floor. The place was so dirty that it looked like it hasn't been cleaned in years. Do not stay at 203... Very outdated and filthy.

We rented a unit via VRBO. Our unit was on the 15th floor and was recently renovated. You can tell this hotel is a little outdated and needs improvement in several areas. Parking lot is very small. They do have a larger one across street. Office is only open until around 6pm. Elevators were crowded, sandy and wet most of the time. No one around to keep them clean throughout the day. They had a sign at the elevators next to the office that stated that this building was not required to have an indoor sprinkler system. Every night people were setting off fireworks in front of hotel until 11pm. They were flying all around the balconies. Rooms facing the parking lots were very noisy even on the 15th floor.
This is my first visit to the garden city area. Not alot of beach/sand during high tide. Very crowded area. There is an indoor and outdoor pool. Outdoor pool is located in parking lot of the hotel. Everyday around 10 and 3 it was really hard to get an elevator to go up or down. We just hopped on one no matter which way it was going or we would have waited a long time. Noticed this on saturday and sunday due to check in/out. We were able to rent this unit from a Friday-Tuesday. Check VRBO if you dont want to stay a full week. We will not return to this hotel.

Room Tip: not sure where you would find the perfect room at this place.

We've been going to Atalaya Towers for years. If you read the reviews, you will notice some really great ones and some really really bad ones. Let me clarify something very important about staying at Atalaya Towers. There are different rental companies that rent this place. Some people own a unit all year long, some rent it all year long and others are a member of a timeshare group managed by Defender resorts. I'm a member of the timeshare group and it seems like the reviews that are coming in that are mostly negative are from people renting through a private person via Dunes Realty or something like that. The units we stay in always seem to be very well maintained and we've always been satisfied.

The major draw of this place is that it is located right on the beach. When I say right on the beach, I mean you walk down steps and are ON the beach. There is an outdoor pool, indoor pool, and hot tub. There are fresh water showers when coming off the beach. This hotel is not a new place but it's one of those places where you don't feel like you can't sit on the couch in a wet bathing suit. It's comfortable and it's convenient. All rooms have balconies that face the ocean and provide one heck of a view. Request / Rent an end unit if you are able as they are bigger and you don't have to deal with elevator noise in the 2nd / 3rd bedroom at night.

Positives:
Right on the beach
Pools
3 bedrooms / 2 baths with a couch bed
Full kitchens w/ Laundry

Negatives:
Elevators aren't the most reliable
The place isn't brand new

Room Tip: End units and through Defender Resorts...

We stayed a week in July with four adults and two small children in a 3 bedroom condo from Dunes Realty. Easy rental process and quick response when we could not get in or out of our door. It was resolved quickly, but just a reminder that these units have some age on them. The HOA should look into making some improvements to the common areas (elevators, etc.). Our unit 1106 has seen better days and could do with some updating particularly the stained and dirty carpets (I wore my shoes the entire time), ceiling paint coming off, blinds that do not cover all of the master bedroom, etc. The end units are very nice because you can see the ocean from the deck, master bedroom, 2nd bedroom, and the dining area. We have never stayed in Garden City as we always stay in Myrtle Beach or North Myrtle Beach, but would return to the area. The rooms were spacious except the bedroom facing the road which was a little small.

Room Tip: End units Rooms have great views

I will start by saying that this is not a new resort; if that's what you're looking for, you will be disappointed. However, if you want beautiful sunrises, ocean views, a great, quiet beach, indoor pool and a fantastic location, this is the place for you! We had a wonderful time, walked the beach every day, and sat on the ample balcony watching the sunrise and the ocean. The units are large, and it is undoubtedly one of the cleanest places I have ever stayed in. I also loved the area; it was close to everything and had that small, beachfront community feel. I felt very comfortable there, and thought the area seemed very family friendly. There were excellent restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: All rooms are oceanfront and have a lovely view.
