“One of the most unique places on the East Coast! Beautiful! Photo-takers dream.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

This is a FREE place to really have a great day and see a beautiful, secluded, and untouched place! You drive down a dirt road through heavy forest, then are taken to a parking lot, where you take a half mile walk down to uncharted territory. You are likely to have very few other tourists there. The seashells are not allowed to be taken, so you see some beautiful things. This was probably the most scenic thing I have done in South Carolina and I have lived here for 2 years. It is out of the way a little, but a must do if you love nature and especially if you are a photographer!!

This was a great break from going to the beach every day. Go check it out one morning or afternoon!

“Very Enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

This is well worth the drive. Very Relaxing and enjoyable, for that little rest away from the beach.

“Great photo opp.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

Botany Bay is an awesome area and must see on your visit to Edisto. The trees dead from the salt water give the beach a deserted feel, and create great photo opportunities. I recommend going in the morning as early as possible due to the fact the beach tends to get crowded later in the day.

“Botany Bay - bare beach forest and shells”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

Sign in at the gate and you are given a map with various stops including the 2 plantation sites, Bleak Hall and Sea Cloud, that once stood on this property, an ice house, chimney of a slave’s house, bee hive well and some early tabby construction. Then proceed to beach. Park and walk over boardwalk and causeway through marsh to the beach. Beach must have eroded and exposed trees to salt water where they lay or stand barren against the shoreline. Very photogenic. Beach is lined with nice shells which you are not permitted to take. Apparently, at one time, visitors were carrying them out by the shopping bag. Now they are left for all to admire. Definitely worth a visit. If you would like to collect shells, there is a landing where you can launch a kayak and paddle (~2 hours) to the far end of the beach that is not protected. Great way to spend a day.
