I have to say that some of the reviews about bugs made me nervous, but I put my faith in the RCI Gold Crown rating. We arrived on a Saturday and were assigned to unit 312 in Sea Oaks. Our unit was on the end and had a small lagoon that wrapped around 2 sides of our unit. Upon entering, there was a small tiled vestibule and a laundry room with a spacious washing machine for a closet model. Up 4 or 5 stairs was the dining room, living room, and kitchen. The carpet had been freshly shampooed and the kitchen and fridge were cleaned thoroughly. The kitchen was roomy and had service for 8 as well as a breakfast counter, 2 stools and a bar sink. The living room had a tv, vcr, stereo and a sleeper couch, loveseat, and comfy chair. The fabric was gently worn, but not dirty or gross. There were sliders out to a deck that had a table and 4 chairs. Up 6-8 more stairs were two rooms. The first was a jacuzzi room with vaulted ceilings and a jacuzzi tub. There was a large wooden seating area around the jacuzzi. There were 8 beach towels provided in this room as well. The second room was a master bath and bathroom. The room and bathroom were clean. There was a desk area with a second phone and tv. There was a large closet, and several drawers built into the wall. A vanity area was outside the actual bathroom. There was a large mirror and hair drier as well as shampoos, lotions and several soaps. There were ample towels in and out of the bathroom. The woodwork was a bit drab, but that's no big deal. The bathroom itself was very small. Up the stairs from the master bedroom was a second room and bathroom. There was a very large closet in this room. There were cottage shutters that opened or closed and the wall opening overlooked the living area. There was a private balcony with chairs and a table through sliders in this bedroom. Up several more stairs from the second room was a loft area with another full size room. There was no closet, but ample storage space. The planking on all decking was worn and weathered, but very typical for a beach environment.
Check in itself was fast and efficient. A concierge helped us with getting oriented to the resort, the area, and the island itself. There were several activities offered. Some were free(mini golf, ping pong, basketball, social gatherings) and others had a fee (excursions, shark teeth hunts, federally sanctioned turtle walks, shrimp boil, arts and crafts). The rec center was staffed with friendly, helpful employees. There was a ping pong room and a fitness center upstairs from the rec office. There were 2 treadmills, 1 elliptical, 1 stairclimber, and 1 recombinant bike, free weights, benches, and a wide array of dumbells available. A pleasant playground and swings were adjacent to the rec center. The mini golf course was very sandy, but shady. It was in need of some minor repairs. The pool was clean and surrounded by plenty of chaises, but only 3 chairs and 3 table/umbrella set ups. The bathroom/shower areas were rustic, but again fairly typical for beachside accomodations.
The resort provided a tram service to the private beach area and resort cabana. It was nice to have bathrooms and a shower nearby. There was also a covered picnic area and snackbar (closed during our visit). The $10 we paid for a large unbrella and 2 chaises set up for us was well worth it. The beach itself was clean and family oriented. Everyone we met was very friendly and even shared toys and played with my kids(5,11). The tide was strong and there are no lifeguards on any of the beaches we went on during our stay. Shelling was fun and great during low tide! There is PLENTY of FREE beach access on the island. In fact every block has access and a free parking area. That is something I am just not used to in NY/NJ/CT.
Our resort experience was very good. To get back to the bugs... We had one Palmetto bug (us NY/NJ folks call them cockroaches) in our unit. There were really big spiders in the trees and bushes, but none in the unit. Anytime I have traveled to warm climates, the bugs are bigger- in fact the warmer the climate, the bigger the bugs. People also warned us to keep all food in the kitchen and to clean up very thoroughly because everyone got the bugs on the island at one time or another. The other critters were had were at least 50 turtles and 3 alligators in the lagoon outside our unit. It was fascinating. There were lizards, herons, other water fowl whose names I don't know, dolphins, loggerhead turtles, crabs, and a museum full of snakes (Edisto Island Serpentarium).
Don't come to Edisto Island if you are looking for thrills or excitement. It is a place to chill and relax. Don't pack much, flip flops and bathing suits are the norm. It is NOT Myrtle Beach. Savannah (97 miles) and Charleston (50 miles) are just a car ride away and well worth the trip. Don't miss Hyman's Seafood restaurant in Charleston- it's out of this world and unbelievable!
