“Gone To The Dogs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2011

Been staying here on and off for the past 3 years and it's all been pretty good up until the last few stays. Our daughter attends USC so this hotel is pretty convenient. We just returned from a two night stay and was very disappointed. We don't know when they started allowing guests to bring their dogs but there were a lot of guests with dogs. I had noticed on their website they offered a package price for the over 55 group that "waved the dog fee" and I wonder if people jumped on it? There were dogs in the hallways, dogs barking in the hallways, and even a few at breakfast! We love our dog but she goes to the kennel and not to the hotel. There was also a lot of children running around during cocktail hour, in the early morning, and because of the design of the hotel the noise level is very high as it echoes up the middle of the hotel and into the rooms. The floors in the lobby, elevator, and even the eating area/cocktail area were soaking wet from kids running around in dripping bathing suits. Cocktail hour was more like Chuck E. Cheese than an Embassy Suites. This was not the first time we encountered a lot of unsupervised children at this Embassy Suites. We had to wait to get drinks while all the kids were ordering non-alcoholic drinks at the bar! At one point I considered sitting with the parents of some of these kids since they were at the only quiet table, their kids were running all over the lobby and restaurant bothering everyone else BUT them. When did people become so inconsiderate in public places?
While I'm on the subject of the "Manager's Reception/cocktail hour," They serve cheap tortilla chips, salsa, and pretzels, they have served the exact same thing for three years at every single Manager's Reception! We have been to Embassy Suites that all have fantastic food, snacks and beverages for their nightly cocktail hours.
This is a franchise Embassy Suites and is not ruled by Hilton at all! You get charged if you want internet unless you get someone nice at the desk that decides you are worthy of free internet, totally unlike all the other Hilton Hotels.
The hotel is starting to show it's age and the rooms are a bit dark. The pull-out sofa bed "blanket" consisted of an old, thin, crusty corduroy throw. We asked for a real blanket and after an hour called the front desk again to ask where it was. We then received 3 blankets from two people.
We have stayed at other hotels in the area over the past three years we have visited Columbia and will go back to one of those hotels in August for move in at USC. We don't plan to go back any time soon to this Embassy Suites. However we have stayed several times at other Embassy Suites and loved them! So all Embassy Suites are not created equally! This one, has gone to the dogs!

I would like to apologize about your recent stay with us. We are a pet friendly hotel, but no pets are allowed in the food & beverage areas of the hotel. I would also like to apologize for the noise issues you had during your stay. We will be upgrading to a new bedding package within the next few months that will offer a more comfortable stay. I ensure you during your next visit that you will be 100% satisfied.

We love Embassy Suites and this hotel lived up to our exectations.
Hotel room was clean and comfortable, staff are friendly and courteous, nice gym and pool area, and the breakfast and manager's reception were wonderful.
We ate each night at the hotel restaurant, The Terrace. Food was good and fairly priced and the service staff were pleasant and efficient.

Only problem was the sound of a train horn that blew around midnight and again around 2AM on our first night that made us jump awake because it was so loud. Didn't happen the second night.

With the GPS we were able to get around Columbia quickly and easily and there is a gas station across the street. If you are going downtown, bring change for the parking meters. Overall a nice stay.

Booked the room through Hotwire for about $80.

We had to wait five minutes in line at check in. Obviously, the single employee at the front desk was not equipped to handle his duties. A second staff member would have likely alleviated this problem.

The Manager's Reception was stale, salty nacho chips and/or pretzels. The line for mixed drinks was fairly long.

The room smelled. (we were on the 3rd floor) I'm not sure if it was from a former pet. But, it was not what you'd expect out of an Embassy Suites. We thought about complaining and switching rooms, but we figured it was a small issue. We were told by an employee that this hotel has often been used by insurance companies needing to house people for up to one year.

To make things worse, we were later charged $60 for no apparent reason. I had to call and dispute the charges with my credit card company.

Moreover, this hotel isn't in a good part of town. There are few restaurants within walking distance. (waffle house is next door.) There's a strip club fairly close by. You're better off finding a hotel closer to downtown Columbia that is within walking distance of several restaurants and stores.

Management needs to REALLY start changing some things here. This place is getting sloppy, fast.

My husband, dog, and I stayed here over night on our way to visit my sister. It is extremely convenient off the exit and easy to find. The rooms are spacious and very clean. We enjoyed the extensive breakfast buffet in the morning, and the helpful staff that assisted us.We hope to to stay again on our way to my sisters again!!

Stayed here for a couple nights for business this month. The hotel was a good deal, and the suite was a true suite, unlike some hotels where they try to pass a room with a fridge and a sofa off as a suite. I liked the atrium style of the hotel, and the free breakfast buffet was actually quite good. Only complaint is that the hotel could probably use some updating -- you can tell that it was quite nice when first built, but it looks like not much has changed in the last couple decades. Location was convenient in that it was right off a highway not far from downtown, but don't expect to have much to look at right around the hotel, it's not in much of a neighborhood and I don't think there were many restaurants nearby other than a Waffle House.

Thank you for your loyalty to the Embassy Suites Brand. I am glad you enjoyed your spacious suite and cooked-to-order breakfast. Stayed at this hotel during a quick business trip to Columbia. The staff was friendly and quite helpful in helping me find things to do and places to eat around town. Rooms were roomy and comfortable - more so than most other Embassy Suites that I've stayed at. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone heading to or passing by Columbia.

I have stayed at this hotel several times over the last year and found this hotel to be clean, friendly, and inviting. The breakfast and staff in the morning are both incredible! It is very centrally located and close to everything including the college and downtown. The value for the dollar can not be matched with the breakfast and the cocktail reception at night. If you have a meeting or have to stay in Columbia for any reason, there is no better place to stay.
