“The worst ever . . . no offense to the staff.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2011

Found mold on electrical outlets and throughout the room, excessive dust and dirt on surfaces, smells, damaged drywall, toilet rocked and the seal leaked between commode and floor. The staff was friendly and did what they could, but lipstick on a pig is still lipstick on a pig.

Right across the street from what looks to be an abandoned manufacturing plant, complete with rusting water tower. Hotel is 30' away from active train tracks and two trains came by complete with blowing horns. Vacant lot with half naked homeless on the other side of the tracks.

Continental breakfast was pastries on a tray sitting on the chair behind the front desk. Had to ask front desk for pastries if you wanted them. Also had dry cereal in a dispenser and coffee.

Advertised Free Internet, but was not working during my stay. Checkout was via manual old style credit card machine. Key to room was 70's vintage plastic punch card with holes.

I write this review with mixed feelings because the staff (owner/operators?) were nice and attentive. They even let us switch our rooms initially... But the hotel overall, and specifically the rooms, can best be described as disgusting...

We were in Columbia to see a college football game at the stadium and the hotel's location is great. A short walk to the stadium...

But the room. Floating cigarette buts in the bathroom sink. An musty odor that has me debating whether to burn my clothes. Assorted stains on just about every wall or surface. A "clean" towel with a giant brown stain in the middle. And the shower curtain. The inside of the white shower curtain was near-black with mold and mildew. I expect to have recurring nightmares of the shower curtain, possible requiring therapy...

Any option in Columbia is a better option than The Hearth...

We found this hotel through the magazines at the Welcome Station. The price was inexpensive, but I would have rather spent a little more for better accomodations. It was near to where we were going in Columbia and actually drove by a couple other places and decided not to stop at those.

The lobby was small but looked OK. The clerk was friendly and efficient.

Our room was another story... It was just plain tired. The furniture was all banged up. The curtain didn't have hang properly so there was lamp light all night long. The air conditioner was quite loud when it turned on. We needed the "white noise" because of the busy street and the hotel is in the flight path. The bathroom light wasn't very bright and the shade was burned- not very attractive. The beds were full-sized. One bed had very thick pillows which were great if you wanted to sit up in bed. Light came in under the door because it didn't seal well.

We were the only ones in the breakfast room at 8:00 which we found odd since the hotel was supposedly fully booked. The breakfast was usual fare for a small operation. We found enough.

I wouldn't stay here again.

  • Liked — Close to where we needed to go
  • Disliked — Room appearance, flight path and busy street (noisy)
