“Best place to stay in Columbia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2009

My wife, kids (10 and 5) and I stayed in The Inn at USC over Thanksgiving and it was absolutely wonderful. They have cookies and champagne when you check in, the staff was outstanding, parking was easy and the breakfast was superb. It is very close to both USC (across the street from The Horseshoe) and the Statehouse (two blocks away). The room was typical of a very nice hotel but the manager's special pricing made it a cheaper alternative than most hotels in the area. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

What a great find. My wife and I have spent many nights in the Columbia area for sporting events, concerts, etc. and we were not aware of this wonderful inn until recently and we just completed a two night weekend stay. First the positives:
1. Great location- right near the University of South Caroina (USC) campus, but in a quiet residential area, excellent for walking, jogging and getting to the main restaurant and shopping areas- the Vista and Five Points- and all USC events.
2. Beautifully renovated and well appointed building. Comfortable public areas. Smooth check in. Free convenient parking. Excellent sweat tea, lemonade, coffeee available adjacent to the check- in desk. Nice low key "happy hour" in the early evening.
3. The staff at this Inn make you feel like you are at home. We were pleasantly surprised to see the general manager -Daniel- helping new guests late Friday afternoon and throughout the weekend. Friendly and helpful staff for the excellent hot (made to order omelets, grits, bacon, hash, fresh fruit, etc., etc.) breakfast each morning- this is more like a large family gathering for breakfast then a typical tired hotel breakfast bar.
4. Nice rooms, comfortable beds and bathroom areas. If you are looking for a special or romantic getaway make sure to book one of the larger suites- you will not be disappointed.

The negatives: none, unless you need a noisy, sterile hotel experience or if you need a pool and late night bar action.

Again, this was a great find for us- comfortable, friendly place with a nice staff who made you feel at home and as if they wanted you to return with a convenient location in a nice neighborhood setting.

We have stayed here on most of the occasions that we've visited our son at USC, and when we couldn't get a room, we've been very disappointed. (Book early for Parents Weekend, move-in and ot days, and big football weekends). The staff has always been exceptionally professional and courteous, and our requests have been met with a smile. I love the afternoon beverage service - very relaxing and civilized after spending time with college kids. And every room has been meticulously maintained, sparkling clean and comfortable. I don't understand some of the complaints - it sounds like they may have confused the Inn with a place I've never been. I always recommend it and have no regrets.

I was in Columbia for 3 days to take the SC Bar Exam so I needed a comfortable and quiet place to stay close to the exam site. Booked through a travel site on line and it turned out to be a great deal. This place exceeded my expectations.

Positives:
Super friendly Staff
Very Comfortable Bed
In room fridge and microwave
Free in room wireless access
Excellent full hot breakfast included!
Free parking
Patio area that is probably a nice place to sit when it's not 90+ degrees outside
I was even in a room right next to the elevator, but never heard it in the room.

Negatives:
For those who like to work out, the fitness center looked small. But if the weather is nice, take a jog on the beautiful USC campus horseshoe or in the surrounding neighborhood (between hotel and 5 points) or around the nearby state capitol.

For those visiting USC, this is right by the campus but you don't have to worry about noise, it's no where near the greeks or big dorms.

I stayed at this hotel 3 times this summer and enjoyed it every time. Don't understand the negative reviews at all. The rooms were spacious, the breakfast and short order cook was a definite plus, the staff was knowledgeable and very friendly. The location to the university was perfect. Restaurants and grocery stores were within a 1 mile radius.

The Inn is adjacent to the U. of South Carolina campus, which is where many conferences are held. It is a short walk to the state capitol and a 15-20 minute walk to the downtown museums and "The Vista" entertainment and restaurant district.

The Inn rightly claims to exude a great amount of "southern hospitality." The staff was unfailingly helpful and friendly all the time. They put out nice snacks from 5-7 in the afternoon and delicious cookies from 8-10 in the evening. All the time there is fresh coffee, iced tea, and lemonade in the lobby. About the only weakness is that the fitness center does not have a full set of equipment lacking an upright exercise bike in particular although there is a recumbent. For $5 a day they can arrange the use of a nearby health club, so even that is not a serious problem.

The included substantial breakfast had a hot buffet and omelets cooked to order. Before your coffee cup was empty, the friendly and helpful staff would ask if you wanted a refill.

Was at a conference which is why I was here - not sure I would go to Columbia otherwise. The area around the university is very nice but if you stray too far Columbia would not be my first choice location! However, the hotel itself was fine - good sized room and the facilites were perfectly adequate. My only criticisms would be: (i) there was nothing between the bottom sheet and the mattress - better hotels always put something in-between for hygiene and comfort reasons (ii) the breakfast room was a bit basic - it felt as if it should have been part of the university rather than the hotel. Outside the hotel, the Blue Marlin is recommended as a place to eat. We were warned by the conference organisers to take care at night in Columbia if not in a group.
