“Inn at USC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2014

The staff was very friendly and efficient. The room we have was very clean and comfortable. The deluxe breakfast was delicious and there were many items to choose from. Columbia, SC is a beautiful city and being on the campus of USC - the Inn at USC Wyndam Garden is in a great location. We enjoyed our stay there and hope to return at some point.

Let me start by noting that this is a decent hotel purely from a service perspective. The facility is clean and the staff we interacted with were accommodating and friendly.

The primary reasons I would not give it higher marks are the following:

Location: Yes, it's easy enough to look at a map and see where the hotel is located ahead of time. But as a first time visitor, even Google's street view can't really give you a great perspective. The hotel is on the far fringe of the downtown area where most of the city's non-USC action is. Because we were there after school was out for the Summer, we found ourselves on the edge of a sketchy neighborhood with little else happening. Walking to the "Downtown" area was a long hike crossing many super sized blocks, typical of a center of government.

There was free parking at the hotel, but the hotel's lot is relatively small and you'll likely have a long walk from your room to your car.

The Beds: The pillow-top beds are hideously uncomfortable. My wife and I slept horribly all three nights while we were there. It was particularly evident when we stayed at a Microtel the following night up in Greenville and we both slept so soundly on their modest beds.

Room location: We were in a room which was on the first level, but it was a hike to get to the lobby. The room was about as far away from the lobby as possible. It was also located across from the linen room which seemed to be where all the housekeeping staff went in and out of like a busy bee's nest. Again, just bad luck to get this room, but why put someone in this room if the hotel's kind of "out of season"? Personally, I don't think that your neighbor across the hall should be housekeeping central!

Some positives to be sure; It is pretty clean, has a slight historic feel (although it's a contemporary building). There's outdoor patio areas which looked nice. The internet worked (seems hotels are getting stingier with this "perk"). The breakfast was great, they would make eggs and waffles on request. Finally, if you are visiting USC, then this could be a great option. Just be picky about where they stick you and bring a cot if you want a good night's sleep!

Room Tip: Upon check-in ask to see a map of the hotel showing you where your room is in relation to the hotel...

Thank you so much for you candid and thorough review of the Inn at USC Wyndham Garden. Your comments help us to better tailor our services to provide exceptional service.
Thank you for the compliments on our service, staff, breakfast, cleanliness and proximity to USC. Those are definitely our biggest selling points.
As you mentioned we are nestled in the Historic University Hill neighborhood. All of the neighboring homes are on the National Historic Registry and thus a location like no other. It may seem a little off the beaten path when school is out but that charm is what makes us unique. Our complimentary shuttle will take you to and from the main dinning areas which are 6 (city) blocks away.
The hotel is built around and in a 100 year old house. The custom design had to incorporate the historic nature of the neighborhood and surrounding buildings. This led to a few rooms being a longer walk than others. Your advice to consult the property map is a great idea. We are usually able to change guest rooms based on preferences at check in. The map will also show the parking lot and garage so guests may better plan parking places.

Please let me know when you make a return visit to Columbia and we will be sure to keep you on the closer side. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you

We've stayed here a couple times and have always found the staff very friendly and hotel well kept. The breakfast is darn good and includes made to order omelets and multiple flavors of waffles. Best of all it is on the USC campus and walking distance to stores, restaurants, theatres, and much more. This is our favorite hotel in Columbia.

The hotel was over priced. No room service. We got a non smoking room that wreaked of smoke! The machines outside we're very loud
Convenient to USC but that's about the only positive

This is a very nice hotel with great customer service but there was an error with their system and my debit card. It was charged twice for no reason. Finally the issue was resolved. Outside of this one issue my one night stay was great! !

Thank-you for taking the time to review our property. I especially want to thank-you for recognizing our great customer service. I feel like there is no better tool than being able to provide actual guest input when talking to our staff and empowering them to be great guest service ambassadors, regardless of department. We all have a part to play in our team effort. Your comments allow us to demonstrate our progress as we strive to be better every day. I want to apologize for the billing issue that you had back in May. You were with the MDT Training with the Children's Law Center if I'm not mistaken. They sent over paperwork to us months in advance, and they instruct us on how they want the group billed. Ms. Angela Foulks was able to let us know that a mistake was made with your room after you were checked in, and we were happy to fix the bill after being made aware of the situation. I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced during your stay. I hope if you are in need of lodging in the Columbia, SC area that you will afford us the opportunity to impress you again. Have a great day!
