“Not bad for a budget hotel”

Country Hearth Inn Charleston

Raleigh

First off, let's start by saying that this is a budget hotel. It sounds like many people expect this to be a Comfort Suites or something.

We found a great deal on Orbitz and stayed there for the 4th of July weekend with our little dog. We were immediately pleased to see that the property looked maintained and clean, albeit sparse. The lobby was clean, the staff was very friendly and helpful and our room was ready an hour before checkin.

We were also surprised by the room. (room 201) Being budget travelers, we actually travel with our own pillows and sheets due to the crappy hotels in that price range. Here, we actually didn't need them. The linens were bleached pure white - no stains, the room was clean, the bathroom was clean, no bugs, no weird smells. The A/C worked GREAT. We could have had icicles hanging from the ceiling if we wanted. The non-stinky fridge was a nice touch and the freezer worked with no messy dripping.

We did take a dip in the pool, which was clean and a decent size. One end was actually 6 ft - a nice surprise from most 4ft hotel pools. The chairs and loungers were clean, as well as the surrounding pool area.

The breakfast wasn't exactly "hot", but the receptionist kept it stocked for us. If they were out of anything she readily put more out. The breakfast consisted of some standard cereal, coffee, juice, muffins, toast and a variety of frozen breakfast items - egg patties, sausage patties, biscuits, etc... and a steamy hot pot of gravy for the biscuits. We had to nuke our items in the microwave, but let me tell you - for a budget hotel I preferred this over questioning the sanitation of some hidden kitchen.

The night staff was very helpful with directions and the surrounding area was a great location for food and drinks. There's a mall across the street with a plethora of restaurants, fast food, and bars.

So the cons - well, they weren't so much cons as they were exactly what we expected for staying at a budget hotel. Yes, the carpet in the room was old (but at least it was vacuumed). Yes, there were some interesting travellers there (but aren't there always for $60 a night?). Yes, the drink machine and washer and dryer were questionable (but that's the way it usually is).

Aside from the little things, we were pleasantly surprised and would stay at that place again.

This inn is awful! starting with the nasty carpets that I was afraid to put my feet on. room was dirty with other people personal belongings still underneath the bed; swimming pool was just a hole in the ground, no water with light hanging out and chairs in it; Pepsi machine was out of order; mattress and boxsprings were marred and stained; HOT breakfast that was advertised consisted of the toast and frozen waffles; the wi-fi connection went up to whooping 5kb/s (you might as well go to cheap inn and connecting to neighboring networks).
stay away, there are lots of much better, cheaper places in Charleston, just have to look for them!

Our overall experience wasn't terrible but we won't be staying here again for a number of reasons. While the room was relatively clean (except the sticky tile in the sink area!) and the beds were pretty comfortable, the overall experience left us deciding to spend the extra $30-$40 for a better hotel and area. The shower pressure was terrible! The first morning, half way through my shower, the water just cut off to a tiny trickle. I was left to rinse the conditioner in my hair out in the sink! The worst part was the seedy looking characters also staying in the hotel. On our last night when we pulled up to our room, there was a large group of men hanging out drinking & smoking (in front of non-smoking rooms!). Upstairs another group of men were loud and boisterous until well past midnight. The smell of cigarette smoke came through the door/window cracks. My husband went for the breakfast on the first morning...30 minutes after it started to find only 2 bagel and half-cooked sausage still available. We opted to eat at a restuarant each morning! The coffee pot did not work. We asked for extra towels but received none. The Kleenx box was empty when we arrived and was never replaced. I doubt it's not the worst hotel in Charleston but there are others in or around the same price range that are far better!

“Agreed one of the worst hotels for travelers”

I stayed at this hotel for a week and found it to be one of the worst hotels I had ever stayed in. When I first walked into the hotel the front desk assosc. was sitting on the computer with internet in the lobby and behaved as if how dare I interrupt what he was doing by coming in to get a room. I only booked this hotel because of its convenience to the highway and were it not for that I would never have stayed. They were rennovating the rooms and so there was constant noise. Whats more is this hotel is in what felt like the most unsafe part of town. My room was located on the side of a fast food restaurant and there was a fence leading to a trailor park on the other side and in the fence there was a hole and the most unsavory of characters at all hours continued to walk from the hole in the fence behind the hotel to the fast food restaurant and gas station next door. Lastly I found the hotel staff to be less than helpful and whats worse is when I checked my credit card statement they billed me an extra amount I did not sign for. Apparently at some point during my 7 day stay the rate for my room went up without notice to me. The hotel staff had the gall to say that they told me my rate was going up but obviously I would have remembered such a conversation.

“Half-Dead Roaches”

Country Hearth Inn Charleston

Oct 5, 2006

When we checked in, the hotel clerk first had difficulty verifying that the room had been prepaid through Orbitiz. As it turns out, we were still charged for the room (a second time) on the credit card that was suppose to be used for identification only -- currently in dispute. We asked for a non-smoking room and was assured we were provided one. As soon as we entered the stuffy room, smelling of smoke, we noticed an ash tray on the desk. We called and asked to be moved to a non-smoking room, which was originally requested. The clerk was polite and immediately found us a new room -- though she continued to say it was a non-smoking room and "someone must of put that ash tray in the room themselves." The second room was equally offensive in odor -- it was a Handicapped Room -- however, it smelled of urine. A dead roach was laying feet up on the bathroom floor -- Since it was now late, and we had already been moved once -- we decided to tough it out and hoped it couldn't get any worse. We strategically placed all personal belongings and suitcases off the floor in fear of taking some 'critters' home with us. The next day, after the room had supposedly been cleaned, we found a second dead roach near the bedside. Sheets were never tucked in and didn't seem to fit the King-size bed. The only chair in the room was a stained, smelly old recliner which we feared was where the urine smell was coming from. We couldn't wait to check out and would never stay at one of these hotels again. It's not even close to being worth the savings.
