We recently spent a long weekend in Charleston and selected the Best Western King Charles Inn and were very happy with our choice. The hotel is extremely well situated if you are planning to explore the historic Charleston area and take advantage of all the city offers in shopping, dining and exploring. We didn't have the best of weather, but didn't mind as much as we might have because our room was so cozy.
We had a room at the back of the hotel with a King bed that was firm and very comfortable. There were two arm chairs with iittle lumbar pillows and an ottoman, which provided great seating for reading and watching TV - and they had placed a little table between them as well as a standing lamp. I think this might have been the first hotel room I've ever stayed in that had an actual closet like the type you have in your home with a single door with a doorknob on it. It was wonderful to be able to store our carry-on bags, luggage, shoes, etc. out of the way - with plenty of room to spare. There was a piece of furniture that the flat screen TV sat atop that had three drawers that were adequate for our 3 night stay but might be cramped if you were staying longer and above the drawers was two doors with an ice bucket and glasses inside. On the other half of the inside of this piece of furniture was a mini refrigerator and a safe. There was a marble topped writing or computer table with a desk chair placed next to the TV stand/dresser with a Keurig coffee maker.
Each side of the bed had a night table with several drawers that was very convenient. A padded bench was situated at the foot of the bed which was amazingly useful - makes me want one but I don't have the room!! The clock radio was also a phone docking station and there were plentiful electrical outlets throughout the room, which was helpful in keeping our electronics charged.
The bathroom was larger than most and the vanity had a marble top that matched the writing/computer table in the bedroom and a little glass shelf above the sink to hold your toiletries. In front of the vanity a fuzzy white rug had been placed and the spare roll of toilet tissue was in a little sheer fabric bag with a tassel tie that made it look like a gift These little touches, along with the previously mentioned arm chairs and the honest to goodness real closet made it seem more like you were staying in the guest room of a nice house than a hotel. French doors opened to a balcony with two white rockers, complete with a planter with flowers! Unfortunately, it was too cool and rainy for us to avail ourselves of this amenity, but it was very inviting to look out onto.
The hotel was very quiet and we heard no room noise from the guests in the adjacent room . We very much enjoyed staying in a hotel with a parking lot - and it was a real bonus we weren't charged for parking. The only suggestion I would make to the hotel is that you might consider having the corporate site indicate that the location is under renovation and breakfast cannot be obtained on the premises - and mainly because the home page makes the statement that breakfast can be obtained at every Best Western hotel. We had rain 3 of the 4 days we were in Charleston and we might have enjoyed having breakfast there on at least one of the days, but the upside was that the hotel is in close proximity to several restaurants, so this encouraged us to try some of them, which we enjoyed. Our favorite was Barbara Jean's, followed by Whisk and then Toast.
We liked the extra security measure that required people using the exterior elevator to have a room key. There were two computers in the lower level of the front section of the hotel, which we accessed from the parking lot, as it allowed us to access and print our boarding passes before leaving for the airport.
If we visit Charleston in the future, we would definitely stay at the Best Western King Charles Inn, as well as recommend it to friends and family. The location is ideal and convenient to everything - stores, restaurants, the marketplace - the rooms are comfortable, cozy and well maintained and you get a lot of conveniences and extras at what we felt was a reasonable and fair room rate. Plus, while it's a very nice hotel, it's not snooty or pretentious. While we might have been able to afford to stay at some of the more - well, lovely but more fancy properties in the area, we prefer to stay at a hotel that provides a nice experience without feeling you have to get dressed to the nines to appear in public or wind up looking out of place.
Our room looked exactly like the picture on the web site, but I have to say it doesn't really do it justice. Don't hesitate to stay at the Best Western King Charles Inn - it's almost like being at home.
