“Great hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

This is a nice hotel for the money in the historic district. It's within walking distance to many places and close to several restaurants. We rarely took the car out because it was much more convenient to walk. The rooms are very nice and the beds are comfortable. We found EVERY employee, from the manager to the maids, to be helpful and friendly. It's southern hospitality at its finest! The manager's reception in the evening is a great time to talk with the manager and get tips on restaurants, stores, and driving directions. One of the negatives is the covered parking lot. It is small for the size of the hotel and fills up quickly. If you are arriving in the evening, you will probably have to park across the street---but the hotel doesn't charge for parking like so many others do, so it is hard to complain! Internet service is free as well (unlike some other hotels in the area). The breakfast isn't free and some of the local restaurants are a little cheaper but it was nice to have the hotel restaurant on site. One safety feature that we liked was that we had to use our room key card to operate the elevator up into the building from the covered parking area. We never saw non-guests just wandering around and we felt very safe during our entire stay. Overall, it was a very comfortable stay in a friendly place. I would definitely stay here again if visiting historic Charleston!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the parking lot are cheaper and just as nice if you don't want to pay for a vi...

Thank you for the kind words! Your feedback is much appreciated as well as your business! I am glad you mentioned the free parking as this is such an added value. Every hotel downtown charges from $14-$30 per night. Not only do we offer the on site parking, we also own the overflow lot across the street which accomodates all our guests! We hope to see you again!

This is a well-managed property in a great location on 'Museum Mile' within walking distance of King street shopping and historic/market area around the port.

Room 219 is to be avoided however. Very small room (compared to other reviews....in fact it's about the same size as a recent stay in NYC which is known for small rooms). The bathroom is tiny (this very large man had a difficult time perching on a smaller than normal toilet seat) and the bathroom door opens against the sink, so getting to the sink requires closing the bathroom door which requires awkwardly stepping past the toilet in oder to close the door with the bath mat getting caught in the door because there's no other place for the bath mat to go. I could not figure out for the life of me why the bathroom floor was ice cold until I realized the hotel sits above outdoor ground-level parking. I assume when the weather is cold, most of the second floor rooms will have ice cold bathroom floors. Also, a smaller than typical desk wedged into the corner of the room, so not optimal for the business traveller needing space to work.

The bed was not comfortable for me,but I'm sure it will be fine for others. Mattress/springs didn't appear to be old or sagging and it wasn't too firm (I tend to prefer firmer mattresses)....just didn't work for me.

So that's it for the negatives. On the positive side, the staff were uniformly friendly and professional. Housekeeping was thorough and when I needed to report a leaking shower head (which sprayed everywhere absolutely soaking the bathroom), it was fixed by the time I returned from my meetings. The property as a whole and my furnishings were very-well maintained. The lobby lounge is a fairly comfortable place to hang out with view of the small pool. I had breakfast at the hotel most mornings as my meetings were early morning so no time to stop at a restaurant. The 'cold' buft is overpriced as it's about the same offerings you would get for free at most budget hotels. However, for only $2 more, the 'hot' buffet includes eggs, meat, potatoes, grits, pancakes. For $9.95, a reasonably priced option. However, as others have noted, there are much better breakfast options near by.

And definitely dine across the street at Justine's. Excellent southern cooking.

Thank you for your honest feedback. I apologize if we did not communicate the fact that the Queen Rooms are small and quaint. They work for some guests but not for others. I hope this does not deter your visiting us again in the future. Thank you for your nice review!

You never know what your personal experience will be based on others' reviews, but I took a chance on this hotel based on positive feedback and location. My husband and I could not have been happier. As many reviewers mention, we did not need a car and were able to easily walk everywhere. We found the carpet in our first room was wet for some reason, but Matt from the front desk immediately called maintenance and then quickly offered to move us down the hall. Our second room had no problems. Rooms were clean, with large bathrooms (the lighted make-up mirror was a nice touch!), nice fluffy towels, large stuffed chairs with ottoman, and the bed was comfortable. I enjoyed the fact that it was a REAL four poster bed and not the standard nailed-to-the wall headboard. The Keurig machine was a nice touch. It was too cold to use the small, outdoor pool, but the area was lovely with potted flowers and hanging plants. Everyone we encountered during our four days was friendly and helpful. The manager's reception with cheese and crackers during happy hour was a nice touch, and the manager gave us a list of recommended restaurants. The morning we left, the young lady at the front desk called us a taxi and he arrived on time as promised. I would suggest you not to waste your time with the breakfast area, however as there are too many other nearby options that are much better. Was able to print our boarding passes from free computers. Would not hesitate to stay here again!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with others! I am sorry about the wet carpeting, the guest rooms are regularly shampooed but unfortunately that was the last one of the day and it must not have dried in time for arrival. It sounds like you enjoyed your stay and Thank you for choosing our hotel!

My husband and I took just got back from an anniversary trip to Charleston. We had a fantastic time and enjoyed our stay at the Best Western. The location is perfect - we easily walked everywhere. In fact, once we parked the car, we didn't get in it again until we left this morning. The staff was exceptionally friendly and the room was great. Very nicely decorated, huge bathroom, and very comfy bed and plenty of pillows. We would definitely stay here again.

Very convenient location for walking all over historic Charleson. We had no car but didn't need one. Luxurious room--plenty of counter space in the bathroom; Keurig coffee maker complete with instructions (yay! I was a Keurig novice); balcony overlooking the parking lot but there were rockers to enjoy the beautiful fall weather. The staff, from the front desk to the bartender to the housekeepers, were all so helpful and hospitable. When we checked in, we discovered champagne & chocolates for us to celebrate this anniversary trip. A totally wonderful experience in Charleston, & the King Charles Inn was a big part of it!

We made last minute reservations and the check-in could not have been better. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room was lovely, clean and comfortable with a nice size bathroom, only complaint would be the noise of the heating/air conditioning system. Late afternoon, there is a nice tray of cheese, crackers, olives and strawberries for guests to enjoy. The location is perfect, you can walk to restaurants, shopping and the Market and the complimentary parking is a plus.

I feel slightly guilty giving this place only three stars, so I hope people bother to read my review as well.
There`s nothing really wrong with it, if it`s your style.
The location is good (although everything was slightly more of a walk than I`d hoped)
The staff were excellent.
Free off-street parking in a city is a definite bonus.
Pleasant pool area, although slightly noisy from the traffic.

My main problem was that it just wasn`t "our" sort of hotel. The rooms were small and dark and clutterd with heavy furniture. (we kept walking into the bedframes!) And the beds squeaked.

Good value for money tho`.
