I called the week prior to our trip to try and arrange a blackwater tour. That tour fell through, so we decided to do a 3.5hr kayak through Folly. We met our guide at the designated location at the restaurant on the creek, and proceeded to fill out paperwork. I was slightly taken aback because it was not the friendliest of welcomes (one person in the kayak studiously ignored us, our guide was rather brusque). Our guide greeted us with "Well, it's windy today, so we can cancel if you want." Um . . . hello to you too? Granted, it was a bit breezy, but my friend and I have kayaked before and are in reasonable shape, so we stuck with it.
While paying (I thought I had paid ahead, so good thing I had my wallet), the guide made sure to mention we could tip him then. A little tacky of him, and I declined. We then proceeded down the muddy bank to the boats. Our guide had left fly quite a few swear words as we were heading down, but it took the cake when he dropped the f-bomb in reference to my life jacket. Not very professional.
Once we got on the water, our guide mellowed out. He was very knowledgeable about the area, wildlife, and people. Once he realized we were fairly strong paddlers, he offered to take us the long way back to the launch. We appreciated this, and had fun spotting dolphins on the way back. The kayaks were also nice and were equipped with rudders.
In spite of the rough start, we enjoyed ourselves and got along well with the guide once he mellowed out. It turned out to be a very fun trip.

Thank you for the diplomatic and fair-handed review of your kayaking trip. One of the reasons that we like being on TripAdvisor is to make sure that the product we are offering is excellent. When that is not happening, we work hard to address it quickly.

I messaged you through TripAdvisor to get more information about your tour. There are some details that don't match up with our company, and we're not the only tour provider that departs from Folly. In your description, you mention that you met at a restaurant and went on a 3.5 hour tour. While there are companies that offer that tour length and depart from waterside restaurants, we aren't one of them. Also, knowing our guides and their professionalism, we can't imagine any of them being less than welcoming. It is possible that you were on tour with a different group than Coastal Expeditions.
We're going to use this review as a training tool for the next staff meeting to make sure that this is never the experience for anyone on a kayak tour with Coastal Expeditions.
We appreciate the feedback; You seem to have a objective perspective and managed to overlook some of the shortcomings and have a good time on the water. Hopefully, this wasn't a tour with CEx, but if it was, please know that we have addressed it and spoken with our guides.
