We were torn between eating at Husk (which I really wanted to experience) and at Poogan's Porch, but the latter won because I wanted to have shrimp and grits. So glad that I was not disappointed! The house the restaurant is in is beautiful. Our party of four was seated, as requested, on the upper balcony. The ambiance, with the street lamps and a lightly falling rain was so lovely. We all relaxed with a drink. To start, we had the pimento cheese fritters and fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes, along with the chutney and goat cheese it came with was amazing. My husband enjoyed the fritters. We also ordered the she-crab soup to sample. It was very rich.
For our main courses, our friends ordered the pan roasted duck (which turned out very well) and the calabash flounder (which had a very light breading). My husband had the bourbon braised short rib which was delicious but while it was very tender, it was a bit on the dry side. My shrimp and grits were excellent. It was really not very heavy but the grits were buttery and were complemented by a wonderful sauce. The large shrimp were cooked just right.
For dessert, we had a chocolate pecan pie (but had more of a cake consistency) with bacon ice cream.
Service was great. Our server (wish I remembered his name!) never rushed us and was very friendly and made great recommendations. He also told us about Zoe and Poogan and how they still seemed to reside in the house, and showed us a picture taken of a mysterious blue light on the second floor balcony that could resemble a woman. He also told us of the recent celebrity sightings (apparently Amanda Seyfried and Justin Long had stopped in earlier in the day for brunch!). Overall, a very enjoyable evening.
I would not hesitate to eat here again if I am ever in Charleston.
