“wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

We ate at this restaurant on our last night in Charleston as a special dinner because we knew it was expensive. It was wonderful and lived up to our expectations. Service was outstanding and the restaurant was very pretty. Water was continuously refilled. All staff were always checking on you and numerous people helped our waiter with service. Split the appetizer lobster three ways and it was nothing short of amazing. My husband had the pork chop which he loved and I had a bourban shrimp dish which was delicious as well. Of course we could not pass up dessert and they had so many great options, it was hard to choose. But I love coconut and they are famous for their coconut cake. It was absolutely smooth, creamy and outstanding. If you like coconut, this is a must try. My husband had the banana panna cotta. He loved it. I could not finish my cake beacuse it was so huge and the waiter offered to wrap it up for me, which was great because I did not want it to go to waste and it did not. I ate the rest later and the next day. The desserts were also beautifully presented. Highly recommend this restaurant for excellent food, service and atmosphere. Wonderful!!!

“Excellent Overall Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

A very good dining experience on a Friday night. My wife and I had reservations for 7 pm and were seated immediately upon arrival. Jason was our server and made us feel special. We brought a special bottle of wine for our dinner and Jason made sure to inform us of the $40 corkage fee. We assured him the restaurant had informed us early in the week of the fee so there would be no surprise. We started with the "sampling trio of soups" including the lobster & corn chowder (our favorite), roasted tomato bisque (very good), and chilled spring onion & asparagus (a disappointment). For our entrees, I selected the Pan seared Carolina trout---Wow!! one of the best fish dishes I have ever had! There was plenty of blue crab and the brown almond butter set off the fish perfectly. (I had to fight my wife for most). My wife was disappointed with her selection of Honey Roasted Breast of Duck. While she loved the accompanying watercress salad and baby bok choy; she felt the duck was fatty and heavier than she expected. We finished the meal with the famous Coconut Cake and it did not disappoint! While there were a couple of dishes that disappointed; Jason and the other staff were tops and made our experience memorable.

“Risotto was incredible”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

Had the oyster sampler and fish special. I was disappointed when they ran out of the local grouper but the halibut was great as well. The real amazing part was the risotto with large chunks of lobster. And...Of course the coconut cake, which we took most of it to go! My only negative was we were on time for our reservation and they made us awkwardly wait in the bar area for about ten minutes while a few other couples who walked in after us went straight to their table. Highly recommend!!!

Thank you for your wonderful review. I apologize for the awkward wait. We have addressed the issue and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. Chef Graham Dailey and his staff do showcase our cuisine through their nightly specials. Unfortunately, as was the case with the grouper, we have a limited supply each evening as it is an item purchased specifically for that night's service. I am glad that the Halibut was enjoyed. Thank you for the high recommendation. We look forward to your next visit.,

“Lives up to the hype!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

We stayed at Planter's Inn for several days. We heard so much about this restaurant, that we saved it for our last night in town, which proved to be a very wise choice. A not-too-large dining area, well decorated and very comfortable. A casual atmosphere, not necessarily formal in that you may leave the coat and tie at home if you wish.

Our table was ready at the prescribed time, and the hostess happily allowed us a few minutes to get a drink in the bar before being seated. Upon request, we were immediately ushered in to meet our very professional, top notch waiter Ralph. His knowledge of the specific preparation methods of the various menu options was exactly what we expected. The service was simply exceptional.

As to the food? The Foie Gras rivals that served at the French Room in Dallas. Oyster stew was truly amazing. In fact, the best that I have ever tried anywhere. The 3 way lobster app should not be overlooked. It too was an excellent choice. The filet and trout were so perfectly prepared, it is clear that true culinary genius resides in this kitchen.

If we had three nights to stay in Charleston, we would dine at Peninsula at least two of those nights. OK, very likely all three nights.
