“Incredible Historical Journey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

My wife and I took the Civil War tour with Oyster Point on our first day in Charleston. This was a great activity for our first day in town (it helped us learn to navigate the city), and was incredibly insightful and educational as well. Bill, our tour guide, was both knowledgeable and passionate. He framed all the sights we saw in the proper historical context, and helped us think about what it would have been like to live in Charleston during this tumultuous period. He also told our group many anecdotes about the people of the time, which made it really memorable and special. This is stuff you won't read in a history book. I think these stories helped to hold our attention for the entire 90 minutes + (not always an easy feat on a history tour). I would recommend this to anyone interested in Civil War history or United States history in general. Even if you aren't a history buff it was a great walking tour and a unique way to explore Charleston. Incredible bang for your buck---can't recommend highly enough.

“Heartfelt & fascinating history, not canned”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

There seems to be intense competition among the various tour companies operating in Charleston. The most popular option is the generic pop-history given by the horse-drawn carriage tours - I overheard one driver's lengthy discourse on how the city's speakeasies evaded Prohibition - entertaining to be sure, but similar tactics were employed throughout the U.S. If you want to know what makes Charleston, Charleston, at the other end of the spectrum is the fascinating & more nuanced historic take on the city given by Oyster Point Tours. The passion for the city, articulateness and impressive academic credentials of Bill, the company's young founder & main guide, have already been cited. He knows how to bring history alive. Most importantly, Bill is a loyal Southerner who is clearly proud of the city, but doesn't ignore the historic "elephant in the room," which is Charleston's legacy as the South's main slave selling market - which is, of course, also the primary source of its pre-War wealth. If you love history, or maybe didn't think you could enjoy "serious" history, this is for you. Completely frivolous added benefit: Bill is very easy on the eyes.

“Walking through History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Bill did an excellent job of customizing the tour to our interests -- specifically he talked about the history of Charleston from not just an historic perspective, but also the economic and religious facets that played a part in shaping the city. He incorporated his knowledge of the original founders to the forces that came into play during the Civil War and also the social fabric of the city, both past and present. Highly recommend this tour!

“Southern Hospitality At It's Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

Being from the Charleston area and having been on many "tours of Charleston", when my husband's family came for a visit to Charleston I wanted to make a good impression on our northern family members. Several people had recommended Oyster Point Tours as being the best. We were met on Market Street to begin our tour and from the beginning each of us were both informed and entertained, Bill, our guide, was very engaging with everyone, answering questions knowledgably (and correctly) while continuing to point out interesting bits of information throughout the tour. We were able to view many aspects of the history that Charleston is famous for including the churches, historical homes and gardens. Not only did Bill show us the area, he also provided the history both cultural and political that has made Charleston what it is. The tour lasted about two hours; but many years of history was presented in that short time. When the tour was over, Bill delivered us back to Market Street leaving our family members with the desire to return to Charleston again. (Thank you Bill, mission accomplished!) Comparing this tour to ones that I have taken in the past around Charleston, hands down it was the best tour that I have been on in our city. Bill, from the Evans' Family, thank you for an outstanding tour and for your undoubted love of our city. We wish you much success!!

“Terrific Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

Great tour. Our guide, whose name escapes me, went above and beyond our expectations. Not only did he take us to some of the most scenic parts of Charleston, but also went in depth of the historical and economical implications of the area. He was even able to deal with a difficult tourist who questioned his credentials/abilities in a professional manner and still provided us all with a worthwhile experience. He was able to explain economic, religious, and cultural aspects of the town's history and did it in an engaging manner.
