Beautiful grounds, good restaurant and disappointing accommodations.
We arrived in the evening and found blood on the toilet seat, the flash line in the room did not work (grounds have no lighting). There was a fireplace in the room, unfortunately the wood was wet and did not burn. We cleaned up the toilet and reported everything to the Front desk.
The following day. We went out in the morning and returned at. 4:30 pm and our room still was not made. They should provide better training for their housekeeping staff.

My wife and I had visited the gardens at Middleton Place a few years ago. We were impressed with the gardens. We booked a weekend stay in October 2014. Housekeeping at the Inn did a poor job of responding to a request for 2 extra pillows. It took multiple calls and hours before they responded. The rooms smell musty. The restaurant staff were just as uninterested in serving customers. Simple orders or request were forgotten even after multiple reminders. The gardens were a disappoint. They have not been maintained and have no seasonal color even in early autumn as they did a few years ago. I would not recommend Middleton Place or Middleton Place Inn to anyone.

BE SURE YOU HAVE GPS - Inn is off a two lane road (one lane each direction) lined with tall trees - pretty during daylight. Speed is 55 mph (should be 40) & passing is allowed; no breakdown lanes or shoulders to pull over. No street lights. No illuminated sign at the inn at night.
PREPARE FOR A VERY BUMPY RIDE - Driveway to inn is bumpy dirt road. Hope you don't have back or hip issues.
WEAR OLD SHOES - Parking lot is sand - couple of inches of loose sand where we parked. When we arrived it had been drizzling, so shoes and bags were a mess. We spent our time there wearing beach shoes and leaving them at the door when we entered our room.
BE CAREFUL IF YOU HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES - Had to walk up steep stairway to get to walkway along our building, then a steep stairway to get to our room. (I pity the poor housekeeping staff having to lug there supplies up and down the stairs!)
BRING CLEANING SUPPLIES - Room was not clean, decor is old and worn (not in a rustic and charming way). Fortunately, we had wipes with us and were able to wipe down the bathroom and the tops of tables in the room (believe me, we're not clean freaks, but there was lots of dust bunnies, couldn't see out the windows, etc., etc.). The toilet ran off and on, and after bringing it to the asst. management's attention, it was NOT fixed.
BACK TO MOBILITY ISSUES - Tub side is about two feet high and at least a foot across. My 6ft husband was uneasy stepping over the side to get in. (There is a safety bar to grab, which, at 5'2", I needed) There's no way you could lie down in the tub, unless you want to have the block end sticking into your neck or sit on small square tiles (very old, dated tub).
AGAIN, WEAR OLD SHOES - Breakfast is in a building a 5 minute walk away - over crushed shell walkways and over sand parking lots. The breakfast building is nice and appeared clean. The offerings were okay - nothing hot, except oatmeal. If you want to go to the gardens, it is not a short walk away - it's a mile and a half walk.
THE STAFF - The only good thing about the place. Everyone we encountered, with the exception of the asst. manager on the phone, was a pleasure.
MIDDLETON PLACE/GARDENS - We enjoyed touring the house (excellent guide) and the historic grounds. Felt the gardens did not live up to the pictures. River view was beautiful.
AT FIRST GLANCE this place looks nice, but a second glance will show you that neither the grounds around the inn, nor the rooms, are well kept.

IN THE INTEREST OF FULL DISCLOSURE - We were given a price adjustment due to our dissatisfaction; however, we doubt we would return.

You arrive on a secluded country road, pass the horses and beautiful setting. Non-paved lane gives a great ambiance, reminiscent of an English country road. The pristine room was very spacious with a simple elegance. Plantation shutters from ceiling to floor on three sides, which gave great privacy and natural lighting. Plenty of storage to unpack your suitcase. Mattress, bedding and down pillows were equivalent to the Hotel Pierre in NYC. The bath was spacious with natural lighting, reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright and fine Japanese design. The soaking tub was a treat and timeless. Moreover the convenient restaurant minutes away, had exceptional cuisine. Convenient to downtown Charleston and various restaurants nearby. The whole experience at Middleton Inn had the ambiance of an exclusive, private resort. I would recommend this Inn to my most demanding friends. Greatly looking forward to a return trip. The staff was most friendly and most accommodating.

Room tip: All rooms have a unique view,

The Inn is located on the Middleton Place Plantation, which has beautiful gardens and historic buildings. It is a good alternative from staying downtown. We stayed in a Riverview Grand Room, which was quite large, with floor-to-ceiling windows on 2 sides. There was a nice fireplace, but the weather was too warm for us to use it. The bathroom is quite dated and needs to be remodeled. For some reason, there were no luggage racks, so the only alternative is to use the banco around the fireplace. We had 2 issues with the Inn. The roads into the Plantation are atrocious - I mean at 10mph you still have a very rough ride. For the price of the room, the breakfast should have been more inclusive - it was basically a continental breakfast. For $12 you could order a regular breakfast.
Also, be aware that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and you are some distance from a decent restaurant. Included in the stay is a nice daily manager's reception with wine and beer and nice appetizers.

Room tip: We liked the Riverview Grand rooms.

Thank you for your review and for sharing your thoughts on your visit! We typically open the seasonal fireplaces around the middle of October, and close somewhere in March or April because, as you stated, South Carolina’s weather doesn't offer us that option year round! We have updated most plumbing in the guest rooms; the sparseness of the bathrooms was in the architect’s design to be a contrast to the warm, cypress paneled walls of the bedroom. You are correct that the hearth is a perfect place for luggage, and certainly more secure than a movable rack. One of the best features of Middleton is the dirt roads leading off the highway however they do require constant care. Any hard rain and traffic exceeding the speed limit does cause damage, requiring us to maintain the area once the road is dry. We apologize for this inconvenience but we hope it is slight compared to the calm, peaceful feeling that is achieved once turning off the asphalt highway onto the property. The Healthy Start Breakfast that is included with all room rates consists of house made muffins, oatmeal, various cereals, house made granola, yogurt and beverages. Almost all of the offerings for breakfast are from local vender’s and are sustainable partners offering our guests the best of options. We hope to welcome you back to Middleton again, and look forward to hearing how your next stay goes as well.
