“The Inn at Middleton”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

The Middleton Inn is in a beautiful setting along the Ashley River. I loved the look of the Inn, very modern in such an historical area. The breakfast was very nice with a wonderful view of the river and woods. We stayed in November so the fireplace in our room was a nice touch and kept us cozy at night. I loved the gardens and the historic house tour which was included in your stay. Also loved the evening reception with cocktails cheese fruit and a homemade dip and crackers. The only negative issue was that the room was a little worn and the outside buildings looked like they needed maintenance, such as painting and minor repairs. They also should update their TV's with a nice flatscreen. The drive to Charleston was a little far to me but we came here to get awawy so I didn't mind the drive.I would recomend this hotel for couples who want something diffrent and want to get awawy in a peaceful setting. We stayed in November of 2011 so they may have resolved some of our issues.

The Middleton Inn is set amidst the woods, spanish moss and views of the meandering Ashley River. The accommodations and breakfast are great and the staff friendly and helpful. A short walk takes you to the Middleton Place historic house, gardens and restaurant. The Inn is a short ride from the center of Charleston - away from the hustle and bustle and very reasonably priced, while within easy driving to see the city sights and visit the beaches.

Room Tip: Rooms facing river have wonderful views.

Fantastic visit. Our initial plan was to spend 1-1.5 days on the grounds and then spend our remaining time in Charleston. With the exception of an evening offsite for dinner, we spent the entire time at Middleton. Our stay included a trip through the house museum. The museum and other sites on the grounds made for a good day of walking around and learning about the plantation. For us, the real beauty was the gardens and trails. Everything was so green and alive. Several flowers were blooming during our visit and the contrasts between the greenery and colors presented us with hours of picture taking. All of the staff that we met were very pleasant. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

Great place to visit. Stay at Inn included the gardens. The camellias were in full bloom. The house museum was informative as well as the stable yard. The formal gardens were very peaceful. The volunteers and employees all seemed to enjoy their jobs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Inn. The lodging price included our room, breakfast, admission to the plantation tours and a manager's coctail hour with snacks. We were especially happy that we did not have to get back in the car during our overnight stay. We could walk a lovely path to the restaurant, lodge for cocktails & breakfast and all of the tours of the plantation. We would highly recomment this plantation. Very educational and beautiful grounds.

Room Tip: all rooms are spacious and the queen room was equally as nice as the king room.

My wife and I stayed at the Inn the end of February. I was hesitant at first due to some of the comments I read about the Inn, was I ever surprised! The setting is second to none, I had a feeling of isolation that is just what I was looking for yet felt very safe and relaxed. The setting is reminiscent of what it would have been like in the old days especially after dark. The room was very clean and open, the bathtub is huge and even with the infamous black grout was very inviting. The staff were all very friendly and the free breakfast along with the welcome wine and cheese party were excellent. The views of the Ashley River from the grounds and the room were a bonus. If you are interested in wildlife I recommend a walk (past the kayak rentals) to the south rice field. We saw 43 alligators, ibis, wood storks, moorhens, coots, and many other birds, truly a photographers dream. The free admission to Middleton Place was the icing on the cake! We spent the better part of two days there in order to see and experience it all. The Inn is truly a bargain with all the amenities offered, we enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night.

I agree with the comments other reviewers have made about the Inn at Middleton Place. I stayed there at a discounted rate for two nights in the off season. If I had paid the full premium price, I would have been disappointed. It is time for a much needed upgrade.

The Inn is rustic in keeping with its location beside Middleton Place, but the bathrooms need of refurbishing. Yes, there is a 150 gallon large "Charleston tub" that came with bath salts for a pleasant soak, but tall people would have trouble standing under the shower. The tile was ugly and looked dirty. There was also small spots of mold on the ceiling. The bed linens were skimpy and the blanket I pulled out of the closet appeared was frayed and worn out. I realize that when you go to a rustic outdoor inn some modern amenities fall by the wayside. There is wireless internet in the rooms, but its painfully slow. And the TV looked like it was 20 years old. Maybe a 14 inch screen with a handful of channels along with bad reception. The room was also noisy.

On the other hand, the staff was friendly, breakfast was well done, and the manager's reception from 5-7 did have free wine/beer and munchies. There's also a lot to do: rent a bike, go for a horseback ride, or simply enjoy the gardens at Middleton Place after hours. That's worth a little inconvenience.

Room Tip: Ask for the bottom floor facing the Ashley River. The Inn does not have elevators.
