“Our visit to Middleton Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Great place to visit. Stay at Inn included the gardens. The camellias were in full bloom. The house museum was informative as well as the stable yard. The formal gardens were very peaceful. The volunteers and employees all seemed to enjoy their jobs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Inn. The lodging price included our room, breakfast, admission to the plantation tours and a manager's coctail hour with snacks. We were especially happy that we did not have to get back in the car during our overnight stay. We could walk a lovely path to the restaurant, lodge for cocktails & breakfast and all of the tours of the plantation. We would highly recomment this plantation. Very educational and beautiful grounds.

Room Tip: all rooms are spacious and the queen room was equally as nice as the king room.

My wife and I stayed at the Inn the end of February. I was hesitant at first due to some of the comments I read about the Inn, was I ever surprised! The setting is second to none, I had a feeling of isolation that is just what I was looking for yet felt very safe and relaxed. The setting is reminiscent of what it would have been like in the old days especially after dark. The room was very clean and open, the bathtub is huge and even with the infamous black grout was very inviting. The staff were all very friendly and the free breakfast along with the welcome wine and cheese party were excellent. The views of the Ashley River from the grounds and the room were a bonus. If you are interested in wildlife I recommend a walk (past the kayak rentals) to the south rice field. We saw 43 alligators, ibis, wood storks, moorhens, coots, and many other birds, truly a photographers dream. The free admission to Middleton Place was the icing on the cake! We spent the better part of two days there in order to see and experience it all. The Inn is truly a bargain with all the amenities offered, we enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night.

I agree with the comments other reviewers have made about the Inn at Middleton Place. I stayed there at a discounted rate for two nights in the off season. If I had paid the full premium price, I would have been disappointed. It is time for a much needed upgrade.

The Inn is rustic in keeping with its location beside Middleton Place, but the bathrooms need of refurbishing. Yes, there is a 150 gallon large "Charleston tub" that came with bath salts for a pleasant soak, but tall people would have trouble standing under the shower. The tile was ugly and looked dirty. There was also small spots of mold on the ceiling. The bed linens were skimpy and the blanket I pulled out of the closet appeared was frayed and worn out. I realize that when you go to a rustic outdoor inn some modern amenities fall by the wayside. There is wireless internet in the rooms, but its painfully slow. And the TV looked like it was 20 years old. Maybe a 14 inch screen with a handful of channels along with bad reception. The room was also noisy.

On the other hand, the staff was friendly, breakfast was well done, and the manager's reception from 5-7 did have free wine/beer and munchies. There's also a lot to do: rent a bike, go for a horseback ride, or simply enjoy the gardens at Middleton Place after hours. That's worth a little inconvenience.

Room Tip: Ask for the bottom floor facing the Ashley River. The Inn does not have elevators.

We returned to the Middleton Inn after several years and found it just as simply elegant/plain in the bet sort of way... just as superbly designed... just as picturesque. And the perfect place to restore two very worn-out people. There are no better views from an inn window, no better bathtubs for a true soak... no quieter venues (except when the guest from an evening wedding and hoohaw at next-door Middleton Place came in schnockered about midnight).

Add the wonderful restaurant at Middleton Place as a huge plus.

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone about this place! We don't want it to become overrun and unavailable readily.

Room Tip: Don't think there are any bad ones. Suggest a first-floor room for ease of access, a second-flo...

The whole concept of Inn at Middleton Place is great and I get it, the location is beautiful and quiet. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I even liked the idea of the minimalistic approach of the rooms and all the windows really bring the concept of the outdoors to you. With that being said, the problem I had with my room, and I feel all of them are the same, is if the Inn is going to charge $300.00 a night for lodging then, due to the age of the Inn it is time for some refurbishment. The biggest problem was with the bathroom, the so called 150 gallon tub for couples was very unappealing. It is a large tub tiled in cheap white ceramic tiles with black grout lines. The grout was dark black and lighter black. It was hard to tell if it was just new grout in some places or mold. There appeared to be mold at the wall to the ceiling area, black rubbed off on a towel. The tub is also the shower, the faucets on the shower and sink are well past their prime and need replacing. The bathroom is big enough for a seperate garden tub and shower. Also, the structure of the rooms is mostly concrete and wood which is ok but some trim work to hide transition points would make it nicer. The wood floors definitely need refinishing. Beds need to be replaced with quality mattresses, the ones in the room where lower quality like a cheap chain motel. Like I said, if they are going to charge premium prices they need to upgrade and be a premium place. The grounds and location can not do it alone.

Room Tip: Up stair rooms have a set of steep stairs that are built at a funny angle, older guest may have some...
