The NotSo hostel is such a sweet little place, laid-back and funky, a perfect place for budget travelers who want to get away from corporate america and stay someplace real. The beds (bunk beds in the dorm rooms) were big and super comfortable, they even provided clean linens, blankets and pillows! (rare for a hostel)
I haven't been to any other hostels in America, but have stayed at plenty in Europe, Central America and Asia and the NotSo hostel was definately one where I felt very comfortable. The two kitchens were a great bonus, my friend and I saved a LOT of money by cooking our own food, and got to meet some amazing people as we cooked and shared food. And the free pancakes in the morning are so much fun! It was a great opportunity to practice the subtleties of 'pancake art' :)
So the whole reason my friend and I went to Charleston was to go to the beach (we live in the mountains of NC) and it was literally a straight drive from the hostel to Folly Beach. Now I'm the type to get lost finding the bathroom, but it was so easy to drive to this gorgeous beach from the hostel.
At night we walked downtown to check out the nightlife, which we couldn't have done if we stayed at one of those gigantic hotel chains off the highway, it was nice to not have to worry about designating a driver! NotSo hostel is really close to King St. which is the main place to shop and hang out in Charleston, it was nice to be close enough to walk but far away enough so its nice and quiet.
So all in all, the NotSo hostel is a great place for travelers of all ages to relax in downtown Charleston while not spending a fortune on eating out and whatever else.
I'll totally go back to the NotSo Hostel the next time I'm in Charleston, its such a sweet homey place that I felt like I was staying at a friends' house (well, a friend with a whole lot of bunk beds and pancake mix!)
