“GREAT morning coffee!!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012 via mobile

Great place to valet your car ($20/worth it) and walk to everything. The rooms are big, VERY quiet and have comfortable beds and linens. There is morning coffee and pastries near the elevator every morning which was really good. We took advantage of the rooftop bar ($25 voucher each days stay at check in/thanks) and had two great drinks & dessert. Am assuming the wait staff gets stiffed on tips with the vouchers so tip well! Overall, a great place to stay with amenities that won't let you down. Really close to everything including a Harris Teeter (grocery store) on 290 East Bay, tons of great restaurants, bars and definitely take a carriage ride (we were happy with Classic Carriage Works).

Just back from another lovely trip to Charelston and the Market Pavilion Hotel. After many trips the hotel keeps improving. Our twelve year old had a birthday while on our trip, Kelly in reservation and Susanne went above and beyond to make the day special for her. While we were out they placed her presents on the bed, and had a special desert prepaired for her on the rooftop, what a day.
From Kelly on the concierge level, to Lilly at the downstairs bar, to the door staff the hotel is great! But, it's the people who make it special. Hope to see everyone next year!!!

Very pleased with the hotel and amenities. However we had an after dinner drink and our server had been at work since 10 am. Could see the exhaustion in her appearance and behavior. Apparently these hours are not uncommon. Management needs to care for their people to increase the overall experience for guests.

Thank you for your recent visit. We appreciate your feedback. The Market Pavilion Hotel prides itself on being a great and fair employer to our hardworking staff. Several of our loyal employees have been with our hotel since 2002. Having said that, most of our new staff members are derived from recommendations by our existing loyal employees. Tourism in Charleston can be weekend driven and our food and beverage staff members know the value of working a double on a busy weekend, which is not uncommon in the hospitality industry. While only a small percentage of our staff work a double shift in any given day, they are each given a 2-4 hour break before the start of a busy shift. Yes the day can get long, but on occasion that is the nature of the hospitality industry. Having said that, we can assure you that our staff members are getting the rest and time off that they deserve. Thank you again and we look forward to serving you in the future.

I admit to reading the previous few reviews and to wondering how I stayed in the same hotel that they did. We found the service outstanding in every regard. The staff (Susanne, Grant & Mike) were attuned to satisfying our every request - from finding difficult to secure restaurant reservations to recommending excellent walking tours to locating forgotten stuff in our stored car. The room was excellent with lovely touches. Our time at the lobby bar was memorable. Even the trip to the rooftop had the beautiful view but admittedly lacked in service and ambiance. The hotel's location is outstanding for what we wished to do - walk through this genteel, historic city.

We only stayed one night at this hotel but overall we were not sorry to leave.
The welcome on arrival from the three porters and reception staff was basic and not friendly although the staff at checkout were better. The concierge made every effort to be helpful and was the most friendly of the staff.
The Grill 225 was reasonable with the $50 voucher given on arrival but otherwise would have been overpriced.
The "free" breakfast was very basic, the only alternative seemed to be room service where prices were not cheap. This cost was boosted by a 20% service charge which did not include delivery for which a further $5 was added and an 8.5% sales tax.
The bedroom (217) described as a Luxury King was the big disappointment. It was near the elevator and ice machine both of which made some noise. Yes the bathroom was large with a good array of toileteries but why did this double room have one large comfortable chair with a footstool and one desk chair (dining room type), is the second person supposed to sit on a hard chair? We arrived about 6pm and were surprised to find all the lights on and the curtains closed, we soon found out why. On opening the curtains we found the filthiest hotel windows I have ever seen, however this did not matter as the "view" was of a brick wall about three feet away. Little daylight penetrated the room and it was impossible to tell what the weather was, basically a very depressing room.

Room Tip: Insist on a room with a view and not near the elevators or ice machine.

Thank you for recent stay. We are glad that you enjoyed our value added amenities like the $50 food and beverage voucher as well as the Hermes European toiletries. Thank you for dining in our Prime steakhouse Grill 225. We serve only the best Prime beef and seafood products available. Many guests express that we offer outstanding value, portion size transparency and pricing compared to other steakhouses in the country. We are sorry that you did not enjoy the view in your guestroom. The particular room in which you stayed is a large king guestroom and is frequently requested by repeat guests for its spaciousness and appointments. Thank you for the feedback regarding your windows. We have a very meticulous cleaning program in our room interiors and on the hotel’s exterior. We have renewed our efforts to increase the frequency for cleaning the exterior windows in this area of the hotel. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you again, and we encourage you to request one of our many other room options when visiting us in the future.

Stayed 2 nights, the room was very nice, with an old world charm , beautiful robes and Hermes shampoo amenities. I enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast on each floor. The rooftop pool bar overlooks the city, a great place for an after dinner drink. It's very centrally located to the historical center and in front of the market. I would definitely stay here again!

This past weekend we celebrated my girlfriends upcoming birthday and I am very glad that I chose the Market Pavilion Hotel to do it! Upon arriving at the hotel we were promptly greeted by the valets who helped with baggage and parked my vehicle. Using the valet service is CLEARLY worth the money since parking in Charleston is very tight! I chose to take advantage of the Concierge level after reading previous reviews and was very glad that I did. Julie was very attentive to our needs and was a natural at making everyone feel welcomed during breakfast and happy hour. We stopped by during the tea service but that didnt appear to be much going on. I have to say that the only let down on this trip was the rooftop bar. We are both in our mid 40's and enjoy the dance music but the level of service from the bartenders did equal up to the level of service from the other areas of the hotel. The bar was very crowded and more of a wild and crazy club scene as opposed to some of the more upscale clubs that i have gone to. There were great views of Charleston from the rooftop but the atmosphere took away from the experience due to the feeling of being at a drunken frat party. We promptly left and went to visit other clubs in the area. We went back again on Saturday night thinking that we just had a bad night and it was more of the same from Friday night so we left again. If I were to make a suggestion here it would be to review the layout of the placement of the bar to make it more accomodating to all and perhaps a separate area allocated for hotel guest. We had dinner at Grill 225 on Saturday night and it was AWESOME!! We arrived before our reservation time and were promptly greeted and seated by the host staff. Our server was exceptional and I like how they work in tandem to make sure that all or our needs were met! I was skeptical at first but the portions certainly justified the price and we didn't leave feeling cheated on this one!! I had the 14oz Fillet and my girlfriend ordered the Sea Scallops and we were very pleased with how quickly our food was served and the HUGE portions were on point. We had a room facing the market and I could hardly hear the music from the clubs across the street so no complaint here on that issue. The hotel is worth the price I must say.......our let down was going to the rooftop bar and not getting the same level of experience as the rest of the hotel. I must note that when we arrived we had asked an employee about the nightlife and we were told that perhaps the rooftop might be a bit much and they were correct in suggesting that we might make another choice. By the way.....not only was it my girlfriends birthday weekend getaway but I also chose this as the place to propose......and.......she said yes!!! We will return to The Market Pavilion Hotel again in the future for sure!! Great location......great weather.....great service!!

Room Tip: Request a bay view or market view!!

Congratulations on your engagement; what an exciting time you must have had that weekend. I am pleased you enjoyed both the hotel and Grill 225; that you felt that you received such great service. I do apologize for the service on the roof. It is a great spot but it does sometime get very busy on the weekend, but it is still a great place to enjoy the view and relax over an adult beverage after a full day of activity in Charleston. Please convey my belated birthday wishes to your fiance and I hope you will consider celebrating your next event here at the Market Pavilion Hotel. Thank you.
